ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
GENERAL SUMMARY. Parliament will not be dissolved this year. The Metropolitan Board of Works propose rejecting the electric light on tho Thames embankment, on account of its great expense over gas. Volunteers for the Cape are asked for from the regular army and from those men in the Militia or Reserves who will go ; 1200 are called for.
A tremendous riot took place at Cork, arising out of differences between rival bands. Several houses were torn down, and shillalaghs were very busy. More than forty factionists were treated for scalp wounds. One policeman had his skull fractured.
Howe’s spinning works, near Paisley, have been burned. The loss is estimated at £60,059, and 400 persons are thrown out of employment. All swine imported from the United States are ordered to be slaughtered at tho port of landing. Trechina has been discovered in carcases previously imported. Russia has demanded the extradition of Nihilists by England. The latter positively refuses. The “ News,” however, understands that very cordial communications wore exchanged between the Czar and Lord Beacons field. After Solowjeff’s attempt, tho Czar, in replying to Lord Beaconsfield’s congratulations, expressed his belief that tho preservation of good feeling between Russia and England was essential to the best interests of Ee-opo, and counted upon Lord Bcaconsfield for the maintenance of such feelings. John Bright, in a recent address to his Birmingham constituents, said that the Government are imbecile at home, and turbulent and wicked abroad. “ I leave them to the judgment of their constituents, and the heavy condemnation of history.” Tho iteamer Humboldt has fallen in with the Gladiolus, Oapt. Williams, waterlogged, and rescued one man. The rest had been washed overboard and drowned.
The Shakspeare Memorial Theatre at Strat-ford-on-Avon was formally opened in honor of tho 315th anniversary of the birth of the poet with tho performance of “Much ado about nothing.” There was a brilliant audience. Tho town was gaily decorated with flags and crowded with visitors, notwithstanding the unfavorable weather. The Synod of the Presbyterian Church of England has resolved to appoint tho Rev. D. Patten, of Chigago, to the chair of Theology in the Presbyterian College, London. On April 26th, in the House of Commons, Mr Reynolds, a Liberal, moved a resolution censuring the increased expenditure of the Government. Mr Baxter, in seconding tho motion, warned tho House against a too implicit faith in the boasts of England’s supremacy in arts and commerce. He instanced the enormous advance made by the Americans in inventions and arts.
The steamer Nilles, from Elva to Newport, with a cargo, lias been lost at sea. Three only out of a crow of twenty-three were saved.
Sir Robert Peel, having asked the Government whether steps were to be taken to mitigate the present reign of terror in Russia, was answered that tho Government had no right to interfere in the internal affairs of Russia.
The O’Gorman, member for Waterford city, was called to order for violently attackthe Russian and the British Government. The London and Westminster Bank has purchased 5,000,000 American 4 per cent, bonds at 4J-, making 35,000,000 American Government securities this Bank has recently purchased. Hanlon, the Canadian rower, won the sculling race at Newcastle-on-Tyne, against Hawdon. The excitement was unequalled in the history of Tyne rowing matches. Thejmon appeared in splendid condition, but Hawdon was badly outrowed from the start, and his his adversary took his time all through and won with ease by four lengths. He was cheered all along the course, and congratulatory telegrams were received from Lord Lome. A meeting relation to the Champion ship of England, was held at Newcastle the same evening, May sth. Canadians on their brilliant victory, and explained the circumstances in regard to the challenge for a match between Eliott and an unknown. The challenge was made public, as it was considered only right that Eliott, the present champion, should dispose of all antagonists at home before visiting Australia to try conclusions with Trickett, the champion of the world. Eichard Eenwick, was then declared the unknown, whose name was to be announced after that day’s race to Hanlon. He had been empowered on behalf of Wallace Ross, to challenge Hanlon to row in six weeks from the date of signing articles on the Thames, over tho Championship course, for £IOO or £2OO aside. A match was finally arranged for 16th June, £2OO aside, to be rowed on the Tyne. Bets stood at 1000 to BCOO on Hanlon at the close of the meeting. A congress of miners was to bo held in Yorkshire in May, to decide upon the advisability of stopping all mining in four or five weeks, so as to lessen the output. The British squadron on the Pacific station have been ordered to cruise off tho coast of Peru, while the Chilian, Peruvian, and Bolivian hostilities are pending. The “ Standard ” of the 26th says that one point is brought out with irresistible force in the book on Egypt published yesterday. Neither by fair means or by foul can the Khedive be forced to pay interest on his debts, and the sooner that fact is looked fairly in the face tho better for all concerned. Mr Rivers Wilson has returned to England from Egypt. The Vale of Dublin miners have resolved to continue their strike, but subsequently agreed to a conference with the masters. Tho Hilton Colliery miners resolved on an arbitration. Many are emigrating to New South Walts and other colonies.
