SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Thubsday, Mat 29. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held at seven o'olook. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Cra. White, Andrew, Pavitt, Brown, Charters, Langdown, Hall, and Jones. fHE GABWOBKS BOAD,. The Mayor stated that with regard to the Gasworks road, and the land of Mr P. Cunningham, the matter was now in a fair way of being brought to a satisfactory issue. Or. Charters, however, told him that the parties who had promised to subscribe were very loath to do so. As soon as the purchase was completed he believed the Drainage Board would proceed to lay down pipes and fill up the ditch. He had no doubt the gentlemen who had promised to contribute would do so. Or. Charters said he was quite prepared to give his cheque for £SO as a guarantee at once if necessary. BBTT/BNING OFFICES. A letter was read from Mr Charles Allison, accepting the position of returning officer for the Borough of Sydenham. THE BY-LAWS. A circular from the G-ovoraiont similar to that read at a recent meeting of the City Council was read by the town clerk. The letter was received. BB6UBTBATION OF BIBXHa AND DEATHS. A letter was read from the RegistrarGeneral, stating that the registrar of Christchurch was not supplied with a map of the Borough of Sydenham showing the boundaries, without which the latter officer could not make a correct return of the births and deaths in that district. Or. Charters moved—" That the Town Clerk be requested to reply to the RegistrarGeneral that the Registrar of Christchurch could have been furnished with the necessary information by application to the proper officer of this Council, and that the Town Clerk be requested to give the information required." The motion was seconded by Or. Hall, and agreed to. THE SOUTH TOWN BELT. An account from the Christchurch City Council for £4 16s for work doDe on the South Town Belt, was referred to the works committee. ""'' ' ' hansman's hotel A letter was read from the Riccarton Road Board, asking why the Council had declined to make the new approaches to MrHansman's Hotel. Referred to the works committee to report upon at the next meeting. ASFHALTINQ. A letter wss read from Mr J. T. Bell, Stating that it was intended to lay down asphalte in front of Sydenham Houf e, and asking when proportion of the cost the Council would be prepared to pay. The letter was referred to the works committee. PBIVATB BOOM FOE THE TOTVN CJLKEK. A letter was read fr.im the Tjwii Clerk, asking that he might have a room which he could consider of a privut« character, und in which to keep his papers, &<>., without fear of feheir being disturbed. The application was inade n consequence of the foreman of works and the nspector Laving occupied his room by direction of the works committee on Tuesday evening last. The Council went into committee to consider the que-tion. ~ Ultimately the letter was withdrawn. . DOG KKGISTEATION.

A letter was read from Isaac George Bridget, stating that he had been fined 20j, iiud 7b coats, for a dog owned by him being

without a collar, although on the very day tho officer had called at his house during his absence, ho had actually a collar in his possession, winch hfl had ju.st obtained from tho Council. Ho also stated that he had called previously at the office to agister his dog, but that the collars were not then ready. Under these circumstances he asked a refund of the cost to which lie had been put, viz, 27a. After some discussion, it was resolved to receive the letter, and to inform the writer that collars could have been obtained at the Council any time after the 2nd of January, and that the Council could not, consequently, refund the money as asked. A DISCONTENTED EA.TKPAYEB. A ratepayer (Mr Merryman), asked for the remission of certain rates, on the ground that he had been over charged. He was informed that the amount to which he referred could not bo refunded. Mr Merryman then left the Chamber, saying he would see his solicitor on the subject. WOEK9 COMMITTEE. The report of this committee was brought up and read by Mr White, tho chairman, and after some discussion, was agreed to. BEPOBTB. The reports of the Banitary, lighting, finance, and by-laws committees were also read and adopted, after discussion. After some other business of a minor character, the Council adjourned.
