THE UNEMPLOYED.

We have been favored by hia Worship the Mayor with the following copy of a letter despatched by him to the Minister of Public Works by to-day’s mail November 22nd, 1879. The Honorable the Minister of Public Works, Wellington. Sir, —I have the honor to forward copy of resolutions passed at a meeting of the unemployed, held last evening at the Oddfellows’ Ha'l, Lichfield street. 1 wish to say that the meeting was one of the largest and most orderly I have seen in Christchurch, the necessary expulsion of a drunken man alone interrupting the orderly character of the proceedings'. From a tabulated statement produced at the meeting, it would appear that about 25 per cent, of the unemployed are comparatively recent arrivals, and for the most part day laborers. I am satisfied, from inquiries and personal observation, that there are of mon with families who are desirous of obtaining employment, but unfortunately cannot obtain it at the present time. I would desire to point out, in order to meet the urgent cases, the City Council have given employment to a limited number at stonobroaking, but as they are overdrawn at the bank some three thousand pounds sterling, it must be obvious that they are' not in a: position to find employment for any number even at that work. Under these circumstances I would respectfully urge upon the Government to tako into their earnest consideration the letter dated 24th inst., which I had the honor to forward as the joint application of the City Council and the Sydenham Borough Counci’. May I request an early reply. 1 have the honor to be, Sir, Your obedieut servant, C T. Tck, Mayor.
