Emerald to the Chatham, Bounty, and Auckland islands, says the ** New Zealand Herald,* was to ascertain it the various depots of provisions that have been estaWished there by the Home Government for the use of shipwrecked and distressed mariners, wore in good order and preservation, and supplement them if necessary. At Port Koss, Auckland islands, the depot was found to have been visited by some whalers, a memo, having been left to that etlect. This depot is a most extensive one, abundantly supplied with provisions, tools, and a Snider rule, and on this occasion Major Campbell, a guest oi Captain Maxwell’s, left behind a liberal supply of ammunition. A depot has also boon fitted up ami completed at Cnruoly harbor, on the opposite side of Port Koss. At the head of Perseverance harbor, Campbell islands, the Emerald established a depot, and supplied it liberally with provisions, fhe following particulars with reference to the Chatham and Pitt islands were obtained during the stay of the Emerald there:—Europeans, 200; Maonons and Maoris 122; total population, 322. The islands contain 40,000 sheep, 850 head of cattle, 800 horses, while the runs cover an acreage of 175,000. Since 1872 the births among the Maoris have only been three, fully confirming the opinion generally entertained that the Maori race is gradually dying out.
