[per press agency.] DUNEDIN, May 24. Mrs R. K. Murray fell through a skylight in her hotel last night and died this morning. The weather is miserable.
[Press Special Wire.] AUCKLAND, May 23. The new burgess roll, for 1879 and 1880, contains the names of 1796 voters, being an increase from the previous year of 256. Sir Q-. Urey communicated with the Mayor of Auckland, expressing regret that, owing to the pressure of Ministerial business in Wellington, he cannot remain in Auckland to receive the Governor, in person. The Native Minister will come on to Auckland to represent Ministers during his Excellency’s visit. Should the Governor make a visit to this city after the session, the Premier will make it his business to accompany him. The Improvement Commissioners passed a resolution to-day that negotiations be opened with the city authorities with a view to transferring the remaining work under the City Improvements Act. The Board of Governors held an urgent meeting to-day to consider the question of young men’s evening classes. Eeporters were refused admittance.
At a meeting of the Young Men’s Association to-night, the secretary said that the debt of £IOOO had been cleared off since the mission of Dr. Somerville. The members of the association number 106. Detective Grace has been transferred from Auckland to Napier. Sir G. Grey leaves by the Hinemoa at 2 p.m. to-day, and will reach Wellington on Sunday. GRAHAMBTOWN, May 23. The list of objections to names on the roll . occupies five pages of the “ Morning Advertiser” and contains 1500 names. It is the largest list in the colony and the largest roll. At the nomination of borough auditors today, Meissrs Creek, Lee, McKay, Scott and Wood were nominated. GISBORNE, May 23. Robert Cooper, Native Land speculator, and John Brodie were arrested the lock-up for a breach of the Arm#*?H|H| supplying a Native with a double-barrelrea gun and ammunition. They wore bailed out on sureties of £BOO each. NAPIER, May 23. The inquest on Mrs McLellan was commenced this afternoon, and seems likely to be protracted until midnight. At the request of Mr Lascellos, who is McLellnn’s solicitor, the Press wore excluded, Mr Lascellos stating that his client would be prejudiced by the publication of the evidence. The Napier Fire Brigade talk of resigning in a body, in consequence of the treatment they are receiving from the Corporation. CAMBRIDGE, May 23. The following notice is posted up at the Lands Court in Maori and English : —“ In consequence of the serious affection of the throat from which the Native Minister is suffering, it is absolutely necessary that ho should refrain from business till Monday next.—-Signed, Waddinoton, M.D.” WELLINGTON, May 23.
In Chambers this morning Mr Gordon Allan, on behalf of Gleich, the bankrupt defaulter, applied for a rule nisi, calling upon the gaoler to show cause why a writ of habeas corpus should not issue. The application was granted, and the writ will bo made returnable on Wednesday. Monday next will be declared a public holiday. A boy named Hyland had a narrow escape yesterday when out shooting, by the explosion of a flask of powder which he carried in his hand. His thumb was blown off, and the hand badly shattered, while his face was much pitted with powder. A new paper, called the “ Guardian,” has boon started at Fielding. An attempt was made to wreck the train at Fielding by placing a large sapling, 25ffc, long,
across tho vails before the night train passed. The obstruction was discovered in time by the engine driver. All Wellington solicitors close their establishments on Monday instead of to-morrow.
Several new insolvencies are reported today, and others spoken of ns probable.
