Coursing To-day. —The second day’s proceedings wore carried on under loss favorable circumstances than the first, owing to the disagreeable weather and the scarcity of hares. I'ho undecided course between Tam O'Shantor and Zoe resulted in favor of the former, and Blue Cap (in the Publican’s Plate) ran a bye. The ties in the first and eecond Birthday Stakes were run oil with the following result: — No. I—Markham beat Rex, Young Ridley bat. Chang, Bother’cm beat Chaudos ; No. 2 —Papanui beat Reflection, Bluebell beat Bello of the Isle, Queen Bee beat the Morning Star, and Idaha ran a bye. From the number of courses still to be run when our reporter left, it was then considered doubtful whether they would all be got oil’ to-day. The Queen’s Bikthday.— To-day was bsnrvcd as a holiday by the Banks and different public institutions, with the exception of the Post and Telegraph Offices, which will be closed on Monday next. The reason for opening these offices to-day was that the mail service required it, as the San Francisco budget left this afternoon. The Bitee Bit. —Plurality of office has led to a curious spectacle on the West Coast, where Mr Grimmond, the County Chairman, is also Mayor of Ross. In the former capacity ho has found it necessary to sue himself in the latter form for payment of an award, in an arbitration between the Council and the Municipality. This is nearly as bad as in Auckland, where certain individuals, as Improvement Commissioners, are suing themselves as Governors of the Auckland College. Plurality of offices of this kind is an abomination, and few men of spirit would care to be placed in such ridiculous position. The Resident Magibteatb’s Couet, — In consequence of to-day being the Queen’s Birthday there was no sitting of this Court this morning. A few drunkards, who had been locked up during the night, were released on bail, and will make their appearance on Monday. How an Englishman Should Die. — The Kaffrarian Watchman say : —“ We have received the following extract from the letter of a gentleman whoso testimony may be relied upon :— ‘ When the loss of the camp seemed quite certain, Colonel Pullsine called Lieutenant Melville and said, “ Lieutenant Melville, you and the senior lieutenant will take the colours and make the best of your way.” He shook hands with him and turned round and said, “ Men of the l*24th, we are here, and here we stand and fight it out to the end.” He was quite cool and collected.’ The gentleman who wrote this would not pen anything for the sake of mere dramatic effect, and we are glad to be able to publish it to show an English officer knows how to die when duty holds him to his post.” City Cbossings. —The crossings near the Bank of New Zealand have been renewed during the past few days. This was a very necessary work, as the largo amount of traffic at this point had worn the crossings into holes.

It is considered certain that he is being harbored. Theatre Royal. —“ East Lynne ” was produced last night at the Theatre Royal for the benefit of Miss Beatrice. There was a good attendance. To-night the sensational drama , entitled “ Rose Michel ” will be performed with new scenery and effects.
Value op Land at Ashbueton. —The prices realised at the late sale of town sections at Ashburton show that many people have a firm belief in its prosperous future. From £4O to £7O for quarter acre sections in the remotest part of an up-country town is a very satisfactory price in these times, more especially as it is for cash. Gorse on Fire.— Constable Hayes, while passing along Armagh street yesterday morning, observed the gorse hedge bounding the property of Mrs Symn to be in flames for a distance of four or five yards. He at once obtained assistance, and the fire was speedily extinguished. When ho first saw the fire he observed a boy running away, bat on afterwards interrogating the lad, he denied having set it on fire, and stated that he was running home to tell his father about it.
