THE VOLUNTEERS.
DISTRIBUTION OF DISTRICT PRIZES. The distribution of the prizes won by the head-quarter's companies of Volunteers at the recent competition took place last evening at the Drill Shed. Lieut. Colonel Packe was in command, with Major Dean acting as battalion officer. There was a very good attendance of all the companies, those on parade being C. V. Artillery (Battery E), City Guards, Engineers, and High School Cadets. The head-quarters or battalion band was also in attendance. The same defect was noticeable as on former inspection parades, viz., the mixing up of members of corps in their civilian dresßes with their uniformed brethren at-arms. This was particularly noticeable in one of the companies, and to a great extent detracted from the otherwise soldierly appearance. If the incongruity arises from the new uniforms not having yet arrived, it would be far better on public occasions, such as inspection parades, if the companies appeared a little less in strength, but uniformly dressed. The respective companies having fallen in under their officers, Lieutenant Colonel Packe then came to the front, and addressed a few words to each recipient of the prizes as they came forward, and complimented Sergeant Fox on the high score, 69, being 10 more than last year, with which he had won the first prize in the district. The Colonel also complimented Armourer-Sergeant Mapp, of the E. Battery, on the distinguished position he occupied in the shooting for the carbine prizes, in which he received second place, after a keen contest. At the conclusion of his remarks the Colonel took occasion to explain the circumstances attending the disqualification at the Nelson meeting, of Sapper Marshall, of the Engineers. No stigma attached to Sapper Marshall, as it was apparent to the committee to whom it was referred, that the mistake arose from the permission to give sighting shots beyond the two allowed bj the regulations being wrongfully given by in officer of the association. The disqualification, notwithstanding this circumstance, hka to take effect. The prizes were then presented as follows: —Quarter-Master Sergeant Fox, E. Battery, Artillery, £5; Lieut. Strange, E. Battery, £1 ; Corporul Sinclair, E. Battery, £3l; Sergt. Hill, E. Battery, £2 ; Sergt.-Major Raven, E. Battery, £1 2s; Armorer-Sergt. Mapp, E. Battery, £1 ; Sergt.-Major Judge, C.Y.C., £1 ; Sergt.
