Cous> quent on the generally depressed times, and the number of unemployed increasing, house rents, which up to very recently were very high, are now rapidly falling. There are an unusual number of house 3 emjlv of tenants. It, is stated that Mr For?rood has given up the idea of accepting the Resident Magistracy, in consequence of Parliament not having provided any money for that office. The drapers as a body have resolved to keep the Queen's birthday h lidayon Monday. It appears that the insurance on Moorhouse and Edwards' offices was only for £IOO, though all the adjoining premises are well insured. The Hospital committe of the City Council and several medical men met yesterday to consider what steps should be taken for organising a system of management for the Hospital in future. The general opinion seemed to bo in favor of supporting the institution by voluntary contributions. It was agreed thst the medical men of the city should be invited to draw up written reports, embodying their views. Between eighty and ninety beds are now made up in the wards, which are thus rendered so crowded that instead of each patient having 1200 cubic feet of air he has but 600 or 700. The opinion of the medical men was that it would be inadvisable to remove the Hoepital from its present site, as medical mem practising in town would not be able to undertake the work of honorary surgeons. Jas Huxley, a well-known tailor, has called a meeting of his creditors. There were one hundred and three failures in New Zealand during the week ending Saturday last. The steam crane will be in working order again in a fortnight. A gang of Anderson's workmen arrived from Christchurch by express to-day to repair the damage. A meeting of the creditors of John King, auctioneer, was held to-day. The liabilities are £15,955 secured, and £11,322 unsecured. The assets are put down at £26,951, but there is little or no probability of anything like that amount being realised. Messrs R. B. Taylor and Henry Green were elected trustees. The contractors for raising the Taupo have obtained the use of heavy blocks belonging to the dock, and will make another attempt in a few days. The Auckland Harbor Board decided in favor of raising a loan of £50,000. The funeral of Tolly this afternoon was attended by all the members of the police force Btationed in Auckland and suburbs. ORAHAMSTOWN, May 21. The special wire system will be extended to Q-rahamstown on the 9th next month, as the additional wire from Auckland via Thames und Tauranga will then be completed. A home for destitute children and an old men's refuge is about to be erected here, under the auspices of the Borough Council. WELLINGTON, May 21. The Governor has accepted an invitation to dinner on the 28th instant at the Wellington Club. It is said the Q-overnment hare decided to introduce a Bill next session to provide for a police superannuation fund. J. and H. R. Hallis, butchers, Wellington, have assigned their estate for the benefit of their creditors. One Watson, who injured his hand by the bursting of a lemonade bottle, and who was treated for it by Monteith, chemist, for some days, sought to recover £BO for alleged unskilful treatment. It appeared that he only went to Monteith, having failed to obtain the services of a medical man, and that he neglected to get his hand examined for several days before he went to i the Hospital, when it was in a verj bad state. The magistrate considered the balance of testimony pointed to the fact that the serious character that the wound assumed was due to the negligence oE Watson in not calling upon Monteith. As they appeared to have only just caught, he had little difficulty in extinguishing the fire. He discovered matches plentifully strewed about, and a window seldom used, raised eighteen inches. There is evidence that the fire-raiser stood on a mound of rubbish outside and opened the window. Had the fire had a few minutes' start, little of the block could have been saved. It is a most valuable block. The insurance on Moorhouse and Edwards' premises alone being £3OOO. ~ . , A supplementary "Gazette" lust issued contains the warrant giving the Duntroon and Hakateranica Railway Company permission to use Crown land and public reserves vested in the Crown for railway construction purposes between Diu>troon, in Otago, and Hakateramca Valley, in Canterbury,and the Government consents to the charge and disposition proposed to be effected by said company for incuring the £86,000 proposed to be raised. Was brought to the hospital to-day by the constable stationed at Anderson's Bay. Travellers by the train from Oamaru yesterday afternoon were very much annoyed by a horrible stench in the carriages. It appears that, attached to the engine and in front of the passengers' carriages, were three trucks full of pigs, which had been there for two days. One very large pig was dead, and was much swollen up. The passengers complained loudly about the management allowing truck loads of pigs to precede the passenger carriages or even being on the same train. The Waitahuna school committee, by a majority, decided to recommend an alteration of the Education Act, so as to admit of the reintrodufltion of the Bible into the school. The " Bruce Herald " has been resuscitated in a reduced form. Donald McDonald, the absconding butcher, has been committed for trial on a charge of false representations. It is understood that tho officials at the various railway stations have received instruction from head quarters in Christchurch to give no information concerning railway matters to the Press. INVEROARG-ILL, May 21. A serious accident happened to-day to a man named Nock, at Otamete. He was working in a cutting, when a fall of earth came down, burying him. He was brought into the hospital with a broken thigh and other injuries. An unfortunate drunken creature named Evans attempted to commit suicide by hanging this evening. She was observed in time. At the District Court to-day J. H. Black was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for . larceny. Kidd and Olson were acquitted on the charge of assaulting Constable Coffey at Campbell Town. The evidence was strongly against them, and the verdict of the jury occasioned Borne surprise. The adjourned application of M. H. Bennett, a bankrupt, for an order of discharge, was further adjourned for another month, pending other proceedings being instituted in the District Court. Judge Harvey passed some severe strictures upon the bankrupt's conduct.
