ZULU OR MAORI.

To the Editor of the Globe, SlB, —Your very respected contemporary the “Lyttelton Times” is sadly troubled over affairs in South Africa; evidently it feels that gross mismanagement has taken place. The great pro-Oonsul would have settled business off hand, as hinted by a memo, specially teleS:aphed. It is misfortune that neither the ritish Government, or, for that matter, the British public have acknowledged the manifesto. There is no doubt they will regret it when they note the triumphant manner in which the great pro-O. has settled Maori difficulties at Te Kopua. What could be mere dignified that for Sir Bartle Frere and Lord Chelmsford to meet the blood thirsty Zulu chiefs as equals, and palaver Zulu matters as the great Premier has met the red handed Te Kooti and others —“ and so successfully !” It would mark an era in colonial questions. The new system being so plainly % success, and as our benefactor cannot be spared with the approaching session of Parliament at hand, could not a substitute, an admirer and disciple, be sent to South Africa. But, if the substitute cannot be found, perhaps our leader will abandon finance and telegrams at the call of duty and rush to Natal. One thing would bo proved beyond doubt, should he go—if he thought his absence would cause New Zealand any serious inconvenience, he would find that he was laboring under a serious hallucination. Yours, &c., PIBTMARITZBURG.
