SOUTHLAND COURSING CLUB’S MEETING.

[Press Special! Wire,] INVERCARGILL, May 9. The coursing meeting was finished to-day. Only a few people were present, and hares were very scarce. Four ties had to be run off. The first was between Tapper’s Brigadier and Surman’s Gazelle, in the All Aged Stakes. Gazelle was first on the hare turning her, and Brigadier snapped, the course, however, falling to Gazelle. Surman’s Gyp and Kingsland’s Kip wore next slipped to a strong hare, but the course was a short one, Gyp killing almost directly. This decided the all Aged Stakes, Surman’s dog taking first and second prizes, ,£35 and .£24, for the runner up. The St. Leger ties were then disposed of. First Te Kooti ran a bye, and then Sutton’s Referee and Rattler were slipped, and after an exciting course Referee secured most points and killed. The final event lay between Te Kooti and Referee. A fine jack hare was raised, and led the dogs far across country, Te Kooti taking the course and securing the hare. To Kooti was thus the winner of the first prize, £3l. Releroe took £l7 for running xip. Sutton’s Rattler, the winner of three courses, took £9 Tapper's Mantana and Howard’s Harmony, the winners of two courses, took £ 1 each. The meeting was very successful on the whole. Mr Lloyd, the judge, gave every satisfaction, and the management generally was good.
