THE GOVERNOR AT TINWALD AND ASHBURTON.
The Governor arrived at Tinwald at halfpast eleven this morning. He was received by the County Chairman and members of the Council, who also presented an address. Sir Herpules replied in a very eloquent speech, at the conclusion of which a move was made towards the place where the first sod of the Asburton district railway was to be turned. In reply to the chairman’s request to tarn the sod, his Excellency made a short speech, in which he expressed the hope that the great policy of public works, of which this railway formed a part, would be of great benefit to the colony. At Ashburton Sir Hercules was received by the Mayor and Council, who presented an address, to which the Governor made a short reply. He then proceeded in a four-horse drag on a tour of inspection round the town. A triumphal arch had been erected, plenty of flags wore flying, and the population turned out in large numbers to welcome their illustrious guest.
