NEW ZEALAND.
[per press agency.] Auckland, April 29. The Te Kopua Meeting.
The “ Star ” special correspondent at To Kopua says at 7 a.m. to-day : —“ It is bitterly cold here this morning. The night was one continued babel of voices; sleep was impossible. The programme, as far as I can ascertain, will be a grand reception of the Lower Waikato and Ngapuhis, the distributing of food, and the making of welcome speeches, &c., but no business.”
Wellington, April 29. Several letters having appeared in the local papers complaining of the Banks, a correspondent in this morning’s “ Times ” points out that in reality it is the Banks who are pressed by the public. It argues that the Banks have invested too much capital in the colony, and that the public have made too free with banking capital for trade purposes. Hence the pressure is not on the public, but on the Banks by the public. . , , It is said that the shares in the I oxton and Sandon railway are not t'oing off well, but that the residents in the district will take up all the unallotted shares. Miller’s Tenui Hotel, near Masterton, was burnt down this morning. The probable loss is about <£ 15000. . Mr Gillon, the manager of the Press Association, will sue the late proprietor of the “ New Zealander” in the District Court for JBT9 for telegrams supplied. The case comes off next Friday.
