THE BOGUS TELEGRAM.
[Br Telegraph.] The “ Auckland Star,” in an article of last night, makes the following remarks among others on this subject:— “As our contemporary is so well satisfied with the way in which the item came, it relieves us from any qualms of conscience about our neglect in not sending the news across the street earlier. Iho other papers connected with the associated parties in the South fell into the same trap this morning. The gravity of the situation has been overcome, and from end to end of New Zealand there is a general roar, in which certain gentlemen of piractic proclivities are the only non-participants in the story of these piracies. It should be explained that our partners in procuring these cablegrams from England are Mr Bennett, proprietor of the 1 Synuey Evening News,’ and Mr Syme, proprietor of the Melbourne ‘ Age.’ The cost of the service is dtMOOO a year. for a while the ‘ Herald’s ’ agent pirated the messages in New Zealand, but after we had attacked them several times they changed their tactics and pirated in Australia. In a recent letter from Sir Bennett wo were informed that he had traced the piracy so far as to dis cover that the messages were sent to New Zealand under the signature ‘ Waterloo,’ and he stated that if he could discover the real identity of the veteran pirate ho would institute a prosecution. if only to expose the theft. However, the robbers have gone on trading in their illgotten gains, apparently with impunity. The Dunedin “ Evening Star’’ concludes an article on the above subject as follows That the literary thieves have swallowed the bait and proclaimed themselves ridiculous as well ns dishonest is only a just punishment. In future t h cir telegrams will be looked upon with suspicion, and important nows published by the “ Associated Press ” will require verification before the public can receive it as true.
