H. Thomson. Christchurch, April 9th, 1879. ASHBtTBTON HOME. A discussion arose out of a complaint made by the Master of the Ashburton Home, as to the occasional insubordination of some of the inmates, and asking the guidance of the Board as to his course under such circumstances. The Mayor of Christchurch moved that, in the particular case complained of a month’s leave of absence from the Home should be stopped, and his tobacco stopped for the same period. The Chairman said that course might do with the individual case in question, but some plan must be adopted for the general guidance of the Master of the Home, without having continually to appeal to the Board. The Mayor of Sydenham thought the Master should have definite instructions as to the dealing out of punishment in cases of misconduct. It was resolved that the matter should rest until the Board ascertained from Mr March, who was absent in Dunedin, if he had given any instructions to the Master of the Home on the matter of punishment, and if they found he had not done so, then the Board would take steps to authorise the Master to punish such inmates as might happen to be insubordinate or guilty of misconduct. BXPBNDITtJBK The following return of expenditure, from July Ist, 1878, to March 31st, 1879, was laid on the table :

Montgomery took his seat on the Board, DESTITUTION. The acting secretary brought under the notice of the Board the case of a young woman, a recent arrival in the colony, and who had lately lost her husband by an accident. It was an extreme case, and she was desirous of returning home to England, as she had no relatives or friends in New Zealand. The Board, while commiserating her position, could not give official relief, but stated that if a subscription was got up on her behalf, they would contribute a small sum towards a fund for enabling her to return home. EEPOETS. The report of the house surgeon, showing thirty-five admissions, was road; and also that of the house steward, showing thirty-two discharges and three deaths. After dealing with a number of cases in the Charitable Aid Department, the Board adjourned.
