Time, 2 min. 16 secs _ The Sydney Cup. — A handicap sweepstakes of 20 sovs each, with 500 sovs added. Second horse to receive 50 sovs, and third 20 sovs from the prize. Two miles. Mr Power’s g c Savanaka, 5 yrs, Bst 71bs ... 1 Mr White’s b h Chester, 4 yrs, 9st slbs ... 2 Mr Power’s hr c Bosworth, 7st 121bs ... 3 A splendid race. Savanaka won by half a length. Time, 3 min. 33 secs.
AUCKLAND AUTUMN MEETING.
[Press Special Wire.] Second Day—Wednesday, Apeil 16. The races to-day were poorly attended. Flying Stakes, of 40 sovs, with a sweepstakes of 2 sovs each to go to the second horse. One mile. Mr Walters’ Slanderer. 6st 81b 1 Mr Day’s Isaac Walton, Bst 111 b 2 Mr Walters’ Yatterina colt, 6st 81b 3 Mr Caulton’s Harry Mount, 9st 111 b ... 0 Mr Hunt’s Yattapa, 9st 111 b 0 Mr Kelly’s Joe Leonard, Bst 51b 0 Mr Buckland’s Omega, B=t 51b ... _ .. 0 The race was spoken of as a family affair, Isaac Walton being sire of the two colts, but, despite the relationship, the content was an excellent one. Isaac secured the (best and Yatterina the worst of an indifferent start. At the turn into the eastern course Slanderer crept up upon the quarters of his parent, then getting upon more even terms, raced neck and neck up the straight. Both horses were treated to an appl cation of whipcord, but the younger animal gave the better response, and came away at the saddling paddock, and won by a length. Time, 1 min. 24 secs. Handicap Steeplcchase, of 100 sovs, with sweepstake of 3 sovs each, to go to second horse; 3* miles. Mr Rutherford's Sportsman, 10st 51b ... 1 Mr Morrin’s Don Juan list 21b ... ... 2 Mr Ruckland’s Auckland Kate, lOst 71b ... 3 Loch Lomond, lOst 31b ; Tamatea, lOst 21b ; F arry Mount, 9st 12lb; Day and Martin, 9st 121 b ; Perfume, 12st 71b; Uira, lOst 71b, also ran. The race was a grand one between the first two, and an exciting struggle took place up the straight. Sportsman, however, had the racing in him, and won by six lengths. Time, something over llmin. Autumn Handicap of 100 sov, with a sweepstakes of 3 sovs each, to go to second horse ; 1| miles, Mr Leonard’s Malvern, 6st 81b ... ... 1 Mr Mclvor’s Peep-’o-Day, Bst 41b ... ... 2 Mr Hickey’s Little Wonder, 7st ... ... 3 Parawhenua, 7st 121 b; Venus Transit, 7st 91b ; Yaitapa. 7st 91b ; Lalla Rookh, 7st; Gillie Galium, 6st 71b ; Loch Lomond, 6st 41b; Xantippe, 6st 21b; and Joe Leonard, sst 121 b, also ran. Resolution, Isaac Walton, Merlin, Eliza, Tamatea, Harry Mount, and Omega were scratched. This was another magnificent race. Joe Leonard, Loch Lomond, Yattapa, and;Pcep oDay by turns looked the winner. The contest between Peep-o’-Day and Malvern was exciting, but t> everyone’s surprise the latter came away and won by six lengths. Time—2min. 54iscc. Yattapa fell, but the rider was unhurt. Selling Race of 30 sovs, added to a sweep ot 2 sovs ; distance, H miles. Mr Sharp’s Magician, Bst 91b 1 Mr Hickey’s Little Wonder, 9st 21b ... 2 Mr Limmer’s Lady Godiva, 7st 71b ... ... 3 Bundara, Fly, and Sunrise also ran. This was an excellent race. The general opinion was that it was a dead heat between Little Wonder and Magician but the judge decided that the latter won by half a head. Time—2min. 28sec. The Shorts, a handicap of 50 sovs ; distance,
1 mile and 24 yards. Mr Leonard’s Malvern, 6st 41b 1 Mr Caulton’s Gillie Callum, 6st 71b ... ... 2 Malvern was a hot favorite, and the result justified the correctness of popular opinion. Ho led from start to finish. Gillie Callum ran a good second.
