PUBLIC MEETING AT AMBERLEY.

As a considerable amount of sickness has been provalent in the Ambcrley township of late, it was considered advisable to convene a meeting of tho rosidents to consider what step* should be taken to remedy tho unwholeBorne state of the creok which winds through the greater portion of the town. The mootiug, which was well attended, took place at, the Crown Hotel, on Saturday night, and Mr S. Coleman, a member of the Iload Board, was voted to the chair. Mr. Coleman, in taking the chair, paid he certuinly thought it was time something should bu done to improve the sanitary a' te of the townslnp, and be, though.' that »n r at deal of th" lati opide nic cuuid bo attributed 'o the foul dr.drmge of the creek. lie asked the mc ting to express their opinions upon the matter in hand Mr Greig then proposed the followi g resolution, which was seconded by Mr Stanton : "That the Road Board be requested, through the chairman of this meeting, to clean out the Dock creek, and to doepen the same so as to allow of a more permanent flow of water." Mr Benn said before the resolution was put to the meeting he would Kke to remark that if the township required an extended scheme for bringing in the water, he doubted whether the Board would feel at liberty to carry out the work without levying a spocial rate for the purpose. He thought it could be brought about 120 chains as a comparatively small cost, but if any larger scheme was required to remedy the defect he expeoted that the residents of the town would be asked to supplement the notion of the Board by placing their hands in their pockets. Mr Greig quite agreed with Mr Benn that the'efforts of the Board in the matter should be specially assisted by the residenti if any great works were required, Tout he believed that a permanent supply of water could be obtained at a very trifling cost if the creek was deepened and cleaned out. He thought the Board could easily do all that was required if the people on whose property the creek was situated would keep their portions free from refuse. Mr Robertson asked if tho Board was a Sanitary Board. The Chairman said certainly they wero. Mr Higgins would move as an amondment on the ■motion—" That the Road Board be recommended to divert tho creek by tapping the same into the North Kowai upon that side of the township." He said that having been a sufferer himself, he considered that would be the only effectual method of removing the pestilence. Mr Jesse Wilson said it was a natural watercourse, and he would not allow anyone to stop his water. He considered the last, speaker had done as much to defile the creek as anyone. Mr R. Foster said no doubt the amendment proposed would meet the amendment one way, but he had doubts whether the natural course of the water could be diverted. The only question was about the regular supply. Mr Bonn thought Mr Cookson Bhould be asked to inspect the creek and report as to a permanent stream. Mr Robertson agreed that it was necessary that the surveyor should take the levels. The amendment not being seconded, the resolution upo>* being pub t) the meeting was carried.
