NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE.

A preliminary meeting in connection with the above was held in St. John’s schoolroom on Thursday afternoon, to hear from the Hon. W. Fox the details of the scheme proposed by him for the establishment of the New Zealand Alliance.

The Primate occupied the chair. Amongst those present wore the Dean of Christchurch, Hon. John Hall, Mr Studholme, M.H.R, Revs. J. Stack, Cox, Elmslie, Fraser, Macfarkne, Watson, Walker, Dr. Patrick, and Messrs Hardy Johnston, A. P. O’Callaghan, Bennett, Clephane, and others interested in the Tetnporance cause. The Primate said they were all deeply indebted to Mr Fox for the great interest be had taken in the Temperance cause, and he was very much pleased to bo present to hear his exposition of the proposed association. Mr Fox, who was cordially received, then gave his promised explanation of the principles of the proposed Alliance, going over the same ground that he had taken when speaking on the subject in Dunedin. He pointed oat that the object of the institution was to endeavor to reform the liquor law, and to give the people more complete control in respect to the granting of licenses for the establishment of public-houses. Mr Fox’s remarks viero listened to with interest, and at their conclusion a vote of thunks was accorded to him.

The Dean of Christchurch proposed, the Rev. C. Fraser seconded, and it was agreed to —“ That a branch of the Now Zealand Alliance for the reform of the liquor law bo instituted in Christchurch, for the Provincial District of Canterbury.”

It was proposed by Rev. Mr Watson, seconded by Rev. Mr Elmslie, and carried—- “ That a public meeting be called for next Thursday, to inaugurate the proposed alliance.”

Rev. Mr Watson was appointed seoetary pro. tern.

The public meeting will probably bo held in the new Government Buildings. A vote of thanks to the Primate brought the proceedings to a conclusion,
