LITTLE RIVER RACES.

These races took place on the course, opposite Olphert's Hotel, last Friday. The weather was very fine, and a good sprinkling of visitors from Akaroa and the neighbouring bays put in an appearance. The first event on the programme did not take place till near an hour after the advertised time, and there seemed to be a hitch somewhere in the general management, but as this was only the second meeting held here some allowance mußt be made. Maiden Plate, of 8 sovs. Distance 2 miles. Mr B. Shadbolt's Lone Hand 1 Mr B. Shadbolt's Swell 2 Mr C. Everest's Jack 0 This was a very close race. Lone Hand won by half a head ; Jack close on Swell. The Open Handicap Hurdle Eace did not came off, as two horses only camo to the post, viz., Mr B. Shadbolt's Eclat and Mr Gk Eobinson's Terewhera. Charlie and All Fours were scratched.

For the District Handicap Hurdle Race the same horses as above wer e entered and scratched, and therofore, there was no race. Watrewa Handicai 1 Flax Race, 15 sovs. Distance, 2 miles. Mr G. Kobinson's Terewhera 1 Mr G. Robinson's Tito Kowar a 2 Mr E. Shadbolt's Blue "Ribbon 0 Terewhera bad it all his ow n way. Publican's Purse, of 7 sovs. Distance, one and a-balf miles. Mr B. Shadbolt's Malvina 1 Mr G. Robinson's Tito Koivaru 2 Mr B. Shadbolt's Eclat 0 Consolation Race, 5 sovs. Distance, ons mile. Mr B. Shadbolt's Fclat 1 Mr G-Robinson's Tito FJowaru 2 Hack Race, 5 sovs. D stance, one mile. Mr Tyson's Yankee Grab 1 Mr Lelivre's Moss Ro=e 2 Kuipoi, I«is, and Swe 11 Mso ran. Yankee Grab made the running, and won easily. Mr Shadbolt entered a protest against the winner, on the ground of his having been a trained horse, and having won money as such. MAonr Canoe Race. First prize, £1 103; 2nd, prize, £l. Three canoes started* and it proved a very close race. Euro's Taupo 1 Eobinson's Wairewa ... 2 A public ball was held in the evening at the hotel, which was well patronised, and k.apt up with great spirit till midnight.
