MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, Aphid 2. [Before hr. L. Hellish, >sq., R.M.] Drunk and Disorderly. —There was one case of drunkenness, and a fine of 10s was inflicted. Wife Desertion. Patrick Foley, remanded from the hist inst., was charged with deserting his wife and family. There was a peculiarity in this case, that the defendant, although he deserted his wife and family, did not leave them without temporary means of support. The complainant stated that she wished to get her husband back again, but at the same time, in swearing to the information, she did not wish to insert a complaint that her husband had left her in a state of destitution. She represented this to the assistant clerk who wrote out the- information, and, owing to her agitated state of mind, imagined that she was merely swearing to the desertion, but nothing further. She now wished to withdraw the information, and atated her belief that the defendant, who whan he left her did it to avoid difficulties arising out of embarrassments in his business circumstances, had no intention of permanently leaving her. His Worship permitted the complainant to withdraw the information, at the same time cautioning her to be more careful as to what she swore to for the future, as be had no doubt the clerk had properly filled in the information when she stated the circumstances. The prisoners then left the Court together. LYTTELTON. Wednesday, April 2. [Before G. L. Lee and H. Allwright, Esqs., J.P.’s.] Larceny of Money.— Arthur 0. Applin, a respectable looking young man, was charged with larceny on board the barque Cape Fiuisterre. Sergeant-major O’Grady asked for a remand until Monday to allow him time to obtain the necessary witnesses, who were at Christchurch. Prisoner was, therefore, returned to gaol. Assault. —Captain Day, of the brigantine Star, an American vessel, was charged with assaulting one of his crew. Mr Nalder appeared for the complainant. There was also a case between the captain and bis chief officer. The hearing of both charges was adjourned until Saturday, the American Consul’s assent to be obtained in the interval.
