NATIVE INTELLIGENCE.
[Press Special Wire.] Haweka, March 31. Mr James Mackay arrived here as Government agent to settle the Ngatiranni difficulty. It is stated that in the portion of! laud surveyed on the plains the Native reserves were ignored altogether, and some people are of opinion that this had something to do with the complication which has arisen. Opunakb, March 31. There is little apprehension here of a Native outbreak, and this place may be called the frontier. Mr Mackay and Captain Blake went to see Titokowam to-day, but, as there was a tangi over a deceased chief, the conference is probably postponed. The contingent of armed constabulary sent per steamer Patea is still at Patea, and will possibly remain there until some other steamer brings it on here. The Natives at Parahaka say that there is no contemplation of bloodshed. Taupo, March 31. Topia Tuma, one of the leading chiefs of Wanganui and Taupo, is holding a meeting of the tribes at Tokano, on the south side of Lake Taupo. It is half loyal and half Hauhan, Tokano being the head quarters of the latter. The object of the meeting is not known yet, but it is rumoured to be in favour of abandoning the isolation policy of the Hauhaus. Wellington, March 31. The “New Zealander,” replying to an article headed “Ministerial differences,” which appeared in the evening “ Post,” says “ Probably no Ministry was ever less divided on any particular point than the present Cabinet are upon the Waimate question. Without failing to recognise the extreme gravity of the position, Ministers have made no secret of their firm conviction that the peril will pass away without much delay and without bloodshed.”
