FOOTBALL.
The football season of 1870 was opened on Saturday by the Eastern Football and Cricket Club playing their first match, viz., a Fifteen Versus the Club. The attendance was very good, about fifty members taking part in the game, notwithstanding that it was mail day, which prevented several members from playing. Considering that it was the first match of the season, some very good play was shown on both sides, and it may be anticipated that some fine matches will take place between the older-established Christchurch Club and the Eastern, which has been considerably strengthened by several new players lately arrived from England. The match on Saturday resulted in favour of the Fifteen, by two touch-downs to the Club's one force-down. There wao a largo attendance of spectators, among whom were a number of ladies, who appeared to take a great interest in the game.
