Tho fight for the championship of the colonie® and fifteen hundred pounds, between Foley o 1 New South Wales and Hicken of Victoria, came off near Moama early in the morning. Ihe greatest difficulty was experien ed in evading the police. The mounted troopers were sent miles in the wrong direction; also crowds of sporting people who travelled miles endured the greatest hardship . To prevent the encounter Sergeant O’Meara, of the Victorian police, was present, but was unable to interfere, as the fight took place in the New South Wales side'of the border. Hicken suffered terribly at the sixteenth and last ronud. He was knocked all about the ring, until he fell on his knees. _ Foley showed himself throughout a very hard hitter. Burning of the Northam. The ship Northam, fitted up with Mort’s freezing apparatus, was burned at sea when six six weeks ®ut, on the road to Sydney. While the vessel was burning tho barque Albion, bound for Rio Janiero, came up and rescued all on board. The passengers lost nearly everything. The S.S. Garonne. After the steamer Garonne got off she went back to Adelaide for inspection. The surveyors reported that there was nothing to prevent her going to sea, which she accordingly did. Arrival of Cook the Billiard Player. Cook, the billiard player, was a passenger on board the mail steamer, bound for Australia. The Adelaide Unmrsity The contract for tho University Buildings at Adelaide for twenty-four thousand seven hundred pjunds, was accepted. Immigration to Sydney. Five thousand immigrants have arrived at Sydney from England during the year.
