CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College was hold yesterday at i.l a.m. ('resent —Mr W. Montgomery (in the chair), and Messrs F. de c. Malet, W. J. W. Hamilton, H. R. Webb Tosswill, Potts, J. D Enys, J. O. Veel, Fereday, C. C. Bowen, E. C. J. Stevens, H. P. Lance, Dr. Coward, Dr. Turnbull, and the Rev. C. Fraser. i ho minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Potts asked the chairman if he had received any communication nn the subject of sending exhibits to the Sydney exhibition, and threw out the su gostion that many obj cts in the Mu-eum might be possibly sent under certain restrictions. The Chairman said up to the present he had received no correspondence on the subject, but after the despatch of the regular business for which they had met, ho would bring the matter before the Board. ELECTION OP GOVERNORS. The Chairman said the first business would he the election of two governors on the Board. Messrs W. Reeves and John Gru-g had been nominated, and on the ballot being taken were declared duly elected. Standing orders. Mr F. de 0. Malet gave notice of motion—- “ That in the second line of standing orders, No I, the figures 11 and ihe letter A be omitted, with the view to the insertion of the figure 3, and the letter Pin lieu thereof.” The effect of the alteration would be to enable the Bo »rd to meet for the future at 3 p.ni., instead of as at present at 11 a.m. Mr VI alet al o gave notice of motion that the following words in Standing urder No. 2 be omitted—“ That at any meeting of the Board the Board shall adjourn at not later than say, 1.30, and meet again within an hour after adjournment without its h ing necessary that a specified motion for adj mrnment be made, whether at the time of the adj .urnment there be a quorum of the Board present or not.” absent members. The < hairman said he had received a letter from Mr hi. Wakefield, apologising for his unavoidable absence from the meeting. PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENT. The chair nan said the next business for the Board to consider was the appointment of a Professor of Biology, and as it involved finaucid details, he moved that the Board go into committee to discuss it. The Board immediately went into committee on questions of finance and the consideration of the rop-rta of the several committees The Board having reported progress, it wss resolved that tho report of the committee on the following reports be adopted : AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE’S REPORT. March 27ih, 1879. 1. The committee recommends the Board to purchase 100 acres adjoining the farm at Lincoln. 2 The committee recommends the Board to authorise tho committee to accept a tender for cottage at the farm. 3. The committee recommends the Board to authorise the committee to purchase all the stock, implements, &c., ieq ired for the farm. ESTATES COMMITTEE. The committee recommend the Board to accept the tender of J. F. Dawson for leasing five sections in Geraldine for twenty-one years. COLLEGE COMMITTEE. The committee recommend the Board to authorise the chairman to affix the seal to Greig and Hunter’s contract for building the Boys’ High School, the contract price being (BSB9 8s 6d. LIBRARY COMMITTEE. 1. The committee recommends the Board to authorise the committee to have a catalogue of the reference and circulating libraries printed. 2 That clauses 111. and V. in regulations he altered as follows :—To omit all the words from “one” in the firstline to “ but” in the third, and to substitute the following words: —“ Book or three volumes of any work and no mere at time, except that all the volumes of a novel may be borrowed at the same time.” 3. Clause V. —To omit the word “threepence” in the third line, and substitute the word “twopence.” To add the words —“ Any book that has been in the library less than six months shall not be taken out a second time oy the same person within one week after such book has been returned by him.” it was resolved that the question of the appointment of a biological professor should he postponed until the next meeting. SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE. The Chairman notified that there was a vacancy in the committee of the school of agriculture, end suggested th t Mr John Grgg was admirably adapted to he of use upon it. His name was then submitted for election, and a ballot being taken, he was declared unanimously elected.
