Ford), thanking the Association for having elected him, and expressing his x’egret that he was not able to be present at the first monthly meeting. THE ROYAL ASSOCIATION. The writer thought that if the Association wished to have a national meeting this year, it would he as well to canvass at out e,-and to communicate with those gentlemen in Invercarg 11 and Dunedin who had taken part in the recent meeting at Oamaiu. The Hon. John Hall was afraid that the present condition of things would not lead to a suecess'ul exhibition of the Royal Society in t, hrUt rhurch this year, and it would be better not to have one at all than to have one that would be a comparative failure. They could, however, in the meantime go on with the enrolmen of members. The Chairman thought it was a matter which the special committee appointed should deal with. COMMITTEES FOR THE YEAR. The following sub-com ittees were then appointed for the ensuing year ornmittee to revise prize catalogue for 1879 —The Hon. John Hall and Messrs Boag, Bruce, Hill. Henderson, Murray-Aynsley. and J. The following new members were elected : Messrs Stanley F.dwards, James Jackson, J. L. Wil on, Wm. S'range, Robt Allan, W. J. Fish r, Joseph Grimsby, John Wild, Henry Hobday, J- R Parker. James Bell, Peter Grant, ■ right (of Tattersall’s), Kelly (of Messrs Hallenstein and Co.) PAT OP MEETING. Mr John Anderson, junr., suggested that the date of the meeting should he altered, because, falling at the end of the month in the way that it did, it jusc came ■ bout the same time as the outward Sa Fr ncisco mail left. If the meetings were to be held in the middle of the month, instead of the end, it would he a. great advantage, and at the beginning of the week, instead of the close The Hon. John Hall did not think they should make any alteration hurriedly. A great many persons in the country made their arrangements to attend to business in tdwn on the Thursday and Friday. He would suggest that notice of motion of the change should be given, and that the motion should be brought forward at the next meeting, when they would have all turned the question over in their minds. After some discussion, Mr W. Hoag gave notice that at the next meeting he would move that the meeting be held on the lart Friday, instead of the last Thursday a 'he month. Mr P. Cunningham drew attention to the fact that although firms con d not be elected, he saw several firms as life members on the list. Indeed in some respects individual members might be two or three times represented. In one firm there were no less than five brothers. Some of the firms were now not existing. The Chairman was under the impression that when these firms were elected, the association was in want of their ten guineas. Mr Cunningham said he had not quoted the rules, but the chairman’s ruling, that a corporation could not be nominated. The Chairman said Mr Cunningham had not understood him rightly. He had not ruled in that way. Mr Cunningham thought he had in the case of Messrs Hallenstein. After some discussion, the committee for managing the association was requested to take a note of the objection, and to bring up a report on it. ihe meeting then adjourned.
