[per pbess agbncy.] Auckland, March 26. The Premier's Movements. In reply to a telegram from Mayor Hamilton, Sir G. Grey telegraphs that he cannot notify the date for turning the first sod of the Waikato section of the Thames railway. It depends upon the date of the Native meeting, which is not fixed. A New Opera Company. The Opera Company is to arrive per Hero. It numbers thirty artists, and no expense will be spared to produce a series of Dopular operas. Auckland, March 26. The Harbor Board adjourned the question of water frontage rights to leaseholders. The Board recommended Dr Haines to the Royal Humane Society for saving three lives. Guthrie a' d Larnach's mill, at Hine, has got down seventy thousand feet of timber by a fresh. Charles Borryman, a barman, was sentenced to sixty days' imprisonment for robbing tho till of the Exchange Hotel. Auckland will probably be sent to the Canterbury chess tournament. Wellington, March 26. Dinner to Mr Crawford. The members of the club and the legal profession entertained Mr J. C. Crawford, late R.M., at dinner last night. Mr Crawford arrived here in 1839. Only about three persons were present who were here at that time. Wellington, March 26. Railways in the North Island. The million acres of land just purchased by the Government will be got ready to bo put up for sale at once. The amount realised is to contribute towards the cost of constructing the main trunk line of railway along tho west coast of the North Island. Tenders for the first section, between Kaiwarra and Porirua, are to be called for before the end of April. Maori Candidate. The Ngatikohuna have selected Henare Matua as their candidate for the seat rendered vacant by Karaitiana's death. The King Meeting. Major Kemp and a number of the Wanganui chiefs have left via Taupo to attend the king meeting. Further Land Purchases. Government have completed negotiations for purchasing between ninety and a hundred thousand acres in tho Taupo dihtrict. Ikvkbcargill, March 26. Mr Fox's lecture last night on "Travels in America " was poorly attended. The demonstration committee finally decided last night that for financial and other reasons they cannot invito tho cadets. '
OTAKI, March 20. Josepli Nugent, cook at the Telegraph Hotel, and formerly oook of the Government boats Stella and Hinemoa, was found dead at the foot of the stairs this morning about six o'clock. An inquest is now being held.
