Disteict Couet. —In the case of Mason, Strut,hors, nrtd Co. V. Waller, his Honor Judge Ward, this afternoon, gave judgment for the plaintiff for the amount claimed with costa. . CoTjbt ok Appeal —A sitting of, the Court of Appeal is appointed to be held in Wellington, on May 12th, • Te'iimt- Cabo.-—Mr Brock, who has painted adnie good pictures of Manuka and other celebrated racehorses, has just completed a capital one of Trump Card. It is done in his beet style, and shows this admittedly handsome horse to greet advantage. The picture has born painted to Dio order of Mr G. G. Stead.
Djbthict Coubt. —The case of Mason, Strut hers and Co. v Waller was completed yesterday, and his Honor reserved judgment until to'day, at two o’clock. In the case of Hofmcister’s Trustees v Marks his Honor delivered judgment for the plaintiff for £9O. A report of the proceedings appears elsewhere. Tub Napihb, Haeeoe Board Cask.— This case, which was tried at last nisi prills Sitting's of the Supremo Court, will come up again before the Court, on a motion for a new trial, at the bunco sittings this day, before their Honors Judge Williams and Judge Johnston. Land on Druereed Payments. —About 2400 acres of land in twenty blocks, varying •r un twenty to three hundred and sixteen acres in extent, situated in the Canterbury district, have been oe.t apart for sale on deferred payments. Tho terms and conditions of sale are announced in the <! Gazette.” OdderIIOWSHIP. —The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Benevolent Lodge was held last evening, when there was a large attendance of memb.-rs. It was resolved to make extensive alterations in the hall. Dr. Campbell was elected as medical officer of the lodge and Bro. Hayward, G.M., as treasurer. Tho receipts of the evening were £ 14 Is fid. Lkgau.—His Honor Mr Justice Johnston returned from tho North on Sunday last. A sitting in chambers will be hold to-day, followed by a banco sittings before their llonorc Judge Johnston and Judge Williams. The banco list is a very lengthy one, and it will probably take a week to dispose of it. After the sitting here both Judges preceed to Dunedin, where a number of eases await decision. His Honor Judge Johnston will return in time to take tho criminal business, which commences on the first Monday in April. Enteetatnments at Ashbueton. — 'On Tuesday next an entertainment, at which Mrs Hoskins has kindly promised her assistance, will take place at the Town Hall, Ashburton, in aid of the Foresters. On Wednesday the committee have determined to give Mrs Hoskins a benefit for her kindness in assisting on the Tuesday, on which occasion there will be a change of programme. In tho following week there will be an amateur entertainment for the Knitangata relief fund.
Tub Late Sergeant-Major Kekr.— The following letter is published in the “ Tomuka Leader” :—“ IVrnuka, March 18th, 1870. — To Mrs Iverr—Dear Madam, —I am desired by the whole of the members of No. 1 Company, Temuka Rifle Volunteers, to express to you the heartfelt sympathy for tho loss of your late respected husband ; and T can assure you in him we have lost a sincere friend, and you, wo know, have lost a kind husband ; and we, the members of this company beg that you will accept the enclosed cheque for £2O 13s fid, submitted by us as a token of our sympathy. T am, dear madam, lor the company. .T,' k. Young, Captain No. 1 Company, TRY.” Dinner at Lincoln. —A far-well dinner was given on Thursday evening. 20th inst, by the i cadent* of Lincoln to Mr Frame, the late stationmaster, who ha- recently been promoted to Southbridge ; Mr F. Murray in the chair. On the cloth being removed the usual loyal toasts were duly honored, after which the chairman proposed the health of Mr Frame, and begged his acceptance of a gold watch with suitable inscription. The toast was honored with three times three, ai d Mr Frame made a suitable reply. The health of Mrs Frame was proposed and duly honored. Mr Frame returned thanks, and proposed the health of his friend and successor, Mr Revell, and hoped they would extend to him tu« same kindness and forbearance that he bad received from them. Mr Revell replied. Other speeches were made interspersed with songs, and the party separated after spending a very enjoyable evening. Portraits of Councillors. —For a very long time past the portrait of Cr. Wilson has been absent from the Council Chamber, but it was last night found to be hanging in its old place, a motion having been passed to have it replaced at a former meeting of the Council when sitting in committee. When the minutes of that meetings were last night being read over by the town clerk, Cr. Wilson took exception to the words “ removed from its hiding place,” which he alleged were not used in the motion. Tho Council agreed that in this Or. Wilson was correct, although the words had been used in discussion. Cr. Wilson then fell foul of the town clerk, and said that had tho words in question been really used, he would himself have torn his picture down and t hrown it at .the back of the fire. Tho matter then dropped. It may bo mentioned that within the last few days the portraits of Mr Henry Thomson and Mr John Anderson, which long ornamented the chamber, have been removed. Citv Council. —At the usual weekly rneetir g of the City Council last evening a good deal of business was transacted. A committee was appointed to communicate with the Government with the view of a sum of money being placed upon the estimates for the erection of a residence for his Excellency tho Governor in or near to tho city of Christchurch. The in-pector of nuisances last night reported that there were great complaints about a number of smoky engines used at certain limber yards. He was instructed to lay informations in all cases where the nuisance was not abated. Masonic. —Persons interested in the formation of a Masonic Lodge under the Scottish constitution, and on Good Templar principles, are requested to meet at tho Prince of Wales Hotel, at half-past seven to-morrow evening. Philosophical Institute. —The_ annual conversazione in connection with this institute will he held in the Provincial Council Chambers, on Thursday evening, April 3rd, at eight o’clock.
The Diocesan Synod. —Monday, tbo 11th of April, has been appointed for the nomination of desirous of represent ng the district of Addington in tho Diocesan Synod. Akaroa County Council. —The usual regular meetii g of the Akaroa County Couneil will bo held at the usual place, Hill I’op Hotel, Barry’s Pass, on Saturday, 2!Uh instant, at 11 a.m.
The Late Fete. —The final meeting of the general committee of the fete in aH of the Kuitangata relief fund will bo hold this evening at 7.T) in the City < 'ouncil Chamber. K .taioi Regatta. —lt is expected that the final meeting of the regatta committee will be held on Wednesday. Appointments. —Mr William Mardon has been appointed deputy-registrar of births, deaths, and marriages for the Oxford district. Twenty-two new Justices of the Peace are gazetted.
