HURRICANE AT THE FRIENDLY ISLANDS.

The schooner Albatross from the Islands brings news that the Friendly Islands were visited on Thursday, the 6th instant, by a terrific hurricane, which did very serious damage. The Rom m Catholic church, valued at £3OO. was rased to the ground, as was also the British Consulate, a Government store, Goodfroi’scoprajstore land two out of every three native houses. The native schooner Nakau was totally wrecked, and three natives drowned. Other disasters also occurred. !he result will be very great destitution in the ;roup,_ as the cocoanut trees were all stripped. During the height of the gale, the gla c s registered as low as 27.90. It is estimated that the loss in Tonga through the destruction of houses is £7oi)o. The Roman Catholic Church had only recently been built. It was a large and beautifully finished building.
