THE HYDRABAD ENQUIRY.

[Press Special Wire.] Wellington, March 21

The decision in the inquiry into the loss of the Hydrabad was given yesterday by Mr C. C. Graham and Dr. Diver, J.P.'s, and Captains Eoberts and Praser, nautical assessors. The chiirman, Mr Graham, delivered judgment as follows : —" Having heard the evidence relative to the Hydrabad, we find that the wreck was mainly attributable to a severe gale raging at the time in the first instance, and the partmg of her cables when let go on nearing land; in the second instance, that the master of the ship, Captain Ho mwood, did all in his power to save the ship, and acted rightly in running her stem on to shore at last, as the most likely means of saving the lives of the crew. We are therefore of opinion that no blame is attributable to Capt. Holmwood for the loss of the ship. We would further remark that the evidence produced shows that the log-book was not kept with that amount of care which is absolutely necessary, and while cautioning the chief officer on this point, would also recommend that he devote some attention to the subject of compa-s errors in iron ships " The certificates of the officers were accordingly ordered to be returned. The costs of the inquiry are not to be borne by the master.
