TEE UNIVERSITY SENATE.
[Press Special Wire.] Dunedin, March 19. At a meeting of the University Senate to day the following business was disposed of. The Chancellor read a telegram from the chairman of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College, stating that a petition had been drafted praying her Majesty that the University of New Zealand may be maintained as the only body with power to confer degrees in New Zealand, and would be forwarded to him for transmission to the Imperial Government. He would suggest that the Chancellor obtain the necessary authority from the Senate to transmit it.
The Eev. Mr Andrews moved, and Mr Curtis seconded, a resolution —“ 1 hat the Chancellor take the necessary steps to forward through his Excellency the Governor to the Imperial Government, the petition of the Canterbury College for the mainte ance in the University of New Zealand of the sole power of confcrr ng degrees in the colony.” The motion was carried on division by six votes to four.
Ayes—t;ev. Mr Andrews, Eev, Dr. Bruce, Dr. Heyter, Hon. Mr Gisborne, and Messrs. Heale and Curtis.
Noes—Rev. Dr. Stuart, Rev. Mr Fraser, Eev. Mr Johnstone, Professors Sale and Shand,
The Eev. Mr Fraser moved and Rev. Mr Andrews seconded a resolution—“ hat the Senate represent to the Colonial Government, through the Chancellor, the impoitance of securing for the University at least one representative from the governing body of each public hospital established in the localities where medical classes are conducted in connection with the University.”—Adopted. The Eev. Mr Andrews moved, and it was carried—“ That the names of the successful candidates in the scholarships and B.A. examinations be published in alphabetical order on this occasion.”
On the motion of Mr Andrews, it was resolved —“ That the examiners in Chemistry and Jurisprudence be communicated with, and requested to furnish official reports of the result of the examinations in these subjects, provided such reports, shall not in the meantime come to hand.”
At the suggestion of the Chancellor, the Senate adopted the following resolution : “ That the Chancellor he empowered to appoint examiners for the University examination.” The committee on the M.A. degree reported as follows : that section 3 of the regulation specifying the examinations to he passed for the M.A. degree [page 55J be rescinded and that the following be substituted : ‘3. Candidates for the M.A. Degree shall be examined in any one of the group of subjects as in section 2 of the Eegulations for Honors (page 54).’ Also that anew regulation be made as follows : —‘ 4. The papers set for the M.A. examination shall be the same as set for the Honors examination, and candidates will be required to show a degree of proficiency satisfactory to the examiners, but not necessarily higher th >n that required for the third class in honors. _ That the other sections stand as at present, sections 4 and 5 becoming respect'vely 5 and 6.
