A Gorman sailor named Tell was committed for trial this morning at the Police Court for larceny of .£lO from a seaman on board the Ladybird, on the passage from Wellington to Auckland. Six Maoris were brought from Mongonni today for trial at the Supreme Court as being concerned in cattle-stealing. The Natives at Orakei have been requested by Mr Sheehan to remain a few days to accompany Sir George Grey to the Kingite meeting. Blenheim, March 15. There i 3 a combination amongst the runholders of Marlborough to fight the question of the legality of taxing Crown lands under the Land Tax Act. Mr McNab has been retained as commissioner to appear in support of tho assessment. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Nelson, March 15. Be White's fire, reported yesterday, the following are the insurances on the building : National, .£SOO ; Norwich Union, .£2OO. Ou the furniture, South British, .£250; Victoria, <£2oo ; North British and Mercantile, £250. The National and South British were the first insurers, and it is said thoy will refuse to pay, on the ground that other insurances wero effected without notice. [Press Special Wire.] Auckland, March 16. This morning a fire broke out in a large dwelling-house in Somerset place, Newton, owned and occupied by Joseph McCaghy. A sufficient quantity of hose was not available, and men had to be despatched back to the city for further lengths. Three-quarters of an hour was thus wasted. Owing to the fact that tho house was plastered throughout, it burned very slowly, and although a strong wiud was blowing, the house adjoining did not take fire for a considerable time. McCaghy's house was completely destroyed, and the adjoining buildings, owned by Onions, partially. The owners of various surrounding properties suffered loss to furniture, and their houses were also injured more or less. McCaghy's house was insured in the Norwich Union for £3OO and tho furniture in the same office for £IOO ; Onions was insured for .£2CO in the New Zealand. .During the fire several of those assisting to remove furniture had extremely narrow escapes of losing their lives. Constable Abrahams, Jenkinson, a fireman, and another were seriously injured by falling plaster. Yesterday McCaghy was amusing himself throughout the day firing off a loaded revolver. The origin of the lire is unknown A mile race took place at Ellerahe between Whisker, of Newmarket, and Dore, of Onehunga, yesterday, for .£lO. Whisker won 6fisiJy, A mile walking match came off at the Domain betw'-cu S.ml ill and Hume. Sandall took a lead at the end of the first hundred yards, wmiing ea'-ily. The Cadet district prize firing took place on Saturday afternoon. There were thirty-four competitors. The prize winners were—Brineand 40, Murphy 42, Lee 40. Lawrence 31, Shaw 31, Edmonds 31, Mills 31, Copestake 31. Dunedin, March 15.
At twelve o'clock to-day a large number of school teachers (including several ladies) assembled in the cla-s room of the Normal School, to present Mr John Hislop, late secretary to the Education Board, with a magnificent silver enp. as a token of the esteem in which he was held by the teaching staff of this provincial district. The cup is about 22iu. in height, and weighs 105 oz. It is embossed with classic designs conspicuous among which is a representation of the nine muses, and on the inscription plate appears tho following device :—" Presented, with an address, to John Hislop, Esq., Secretary for Education, N.Z., by the Teachers of Otago and Southland, in recognition of the valuable services rendered by him to the cause of education while Secretary and Inspector of Schools to the Provincial Board." Addresses were delivered by several teachers, also by the Hon. Mr Stout. Mr Hislop, in a suitable speech, ackndwledged the gift. iNVERCARGiLii, March IG.
A pair-oared race*was pulled yesterday by members of the Invercargill Rowing Club. Afterwards the President, Mr Martin, presented the winners with a miniature silver scull each. Ho also presented the winners of tho four-oared race that took place on Wednesday last with similar prizes. Splendid harvest weather prevails.
