CANTERBURY COURSING CLUB.
A committee meeting of the club was held yesterday afternoon at the Shades. Present — Messrs Duncan, Anson, Deacon, Brown, Miles, Porter, and Walker. Mr Duncan occupied the chair. The minutes of the last meeting wore read and confirmed. The question of the choice of the coursing ground for the ensuing season was considered, and on the motion of Mr Deacon, seconded by Mr Miles, it was resolved that a sub-com-mittee consisting of Messrs Duncan and Anson and the secretary be appointed to wait on Mr Elder and Mr Mitchell, the lessees of the two parks, to obtain their consent to the use of them for the club’s matches. It was decided to secured the services of Mr Lloyd as judge for th© season of three meetings.
The consideration of the programme for the May meeting was then proce ded. The secretary stated that the following programme had been drawn up by the president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary, for submission to the commiitee : First Meeting, May 23rd and 24th. — The Birthday Stak. s No. I—For sixteen dog puppies, at £3 3s ; winner, £25 ; runner up, £ls ; and two dog?, £5 each. The Birthday Stakes No. 2—For sixteen bitch puppies, at £3 3s; each winner, £25 ; runner up, £ls; and two dogs, £5 each. The winners of the above stakes to run for the Birthday Cup, the gift of a member. Nominations to close with the secretary at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the 22nd April, and the draw to take place at 5 p.m. on the 22nd May, at the Shades. The Publicans’ Cup, for an unlimited number of all aged dogs, at £3 3s each, with a piece of plate value £2O, the gift of the publicans of Christchurch. Nominations to close and drawing to take place at times specified above for the Birthday Stakes. Vice-President’s Meeting, June 17th and 18th.—The Maiden Puppy Stakes, for an unlimited number of puppies, winners and runners up of other puppy stakes excepted, at £3 3s. The Christchurch Stakes for sixteen’all aged dogs at £3 3s each. Nominations for both the above stakes to close with the secretary at 5 p.m., fourteen days before the day at the Shades, and the draw to take place at 5 p.m. on the day of , at the game place. President’s Meeting, July 24th and 25th. — The Canterbury Cup, for thirty-two all-aged dogs, at £5 5s each, with £4O added by the club. Winner, £ ; runner up, £ ; 3rd and 4th to receive £ each: Canterbury Purse—For dogs beaten in the first round of the Canterbury Cup. Winner, £ ; runner up, £ ; 3rd and 4th, £ each. The Tyro Stakes—For an unlimited number of saplings, at £2 2s each ; to be divided into stakes of eight dogs each. Prizes to be apportioned by the committee after the entries close. Nominations for both the above stakes to close at 5 p.m. on the 10th of July, at the Shades, and the draw to take place there at 5 p.m. on Nominations for all the above stakes must be on forms, to be supplied by the secretary, with the exception of the Canterbury Cup, which is open to members of any country club in New Zealand, the subscription to which is not less than £l. All the above stakes are limited to dogs owned by members of the Canterbury Coursing Club. In the event of stakes not filling, the prizes will be reduced pro rata , ten per cent, will be deducted from prize-money for expenses. The committee reserve to themselves the right to refuse any nominations they may think proper. The programme was approved of. Mr Porter stated he had received an account from Mr Elder for £5 4s, for damages sustained to the fences, &c., during the last coursing season. He regretted that he had not brought it under the notice of the committee sooner.
it was resolved that the account be passed for payment. The following new members were elected — Colonel Paeke, Mr E. Oookson, and Mr E. Ravenhill. The meeting then adjourned.
