NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY SENATE.

[Press Special Wire.] Dunedin, March 14. At the meeting of the University Senate today, the committee on academic dress reported as follows :—“ 1. Graduates must appear at all public ceremonies of the University in the academical costume proper to their degree. 2. The gown for Bachelors of Arts is the same ns that of Cambridge Bachelors of Arts. The hood is of the size and shape of the Cambridge Master of Arts’ hood, lined with pink silk, and bordered with white fur. 3. The gown for Masters of Arts is the same as that of (,'ambridge Musters of Arts. The hood is of the size and shape of Cambridge Masters of Arts’ hoods, lined with pink silk. 4. The gown for Bachelors of Law is the same as that of Bachelors of Arts. The hood is of the size and shape of the Bachelors of Arts’ hoods, lined with light blue silk, bordered with white fur. 5. The gown for Doctors of Law is the same as that of Masters of Arts ; the hood is of the size and shape of the Masters’ of Arts hoods, lined with light blue silk. 6. The cap for all graduates is a black trencher with tassel.” The report was carried, Professor Sale moved, and Professor Shand seconded—" That in regulation 5 of the rogula-

tions specifying the terms to be kept ami examinations to be passed 'or the B.A, decree, the words ‘at least ’ bo inserted before the word • tiro ’ ; that in clause 3 of the regulation amending the regulations for scholarships, the words * and including part of the subject as defined for the honors examination ’ bo omitted, and the following words be inserted in lieu thereof —‘ and not necessarily confined within the limits of the subject as defined for the B.A. degree.’ ’ The Rev. Mr Bruce moved —“ That the preparing of schedule of subjects of examination for the degree of B.A. and for honors for 1881-2 bo remitted to a committee, consisting of Professors Shalid and Bale, Messrs Healo and Gisborne, the Rev. Mr Andrew, Dr. Hector, and the mover; that the preparing of the schedule of subjects ef examination for the degree of L.L.B. for 1880-1-2 bo remitted to the committee on revision of regulations for degrees in law.” The foregoing resolutions were carried. At the meeting of (Senate yesterday it .was resolved—“ That in the opinion of the University it is undesirable that the power to confer University degrees should be possessed by more than one institution in the colony.”
