CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, March 15.

[Before Q-. L. Lee, Esq., and F. Hobbs, Esq.. J.P.’s.J Drunk and Disorderly. —George Wm. Dormish, charged with drunkenness and making use of obscene language, was fined 20s. Two first offenders were fined 5s each. Forgery and Uttering. —William Salmon was charged with forging and uttering a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, for £l9 17s Bd. Detective Benjamin deposed to the arrest of the accused on the previous day. On the application of Mr Inspector Hickson, the accused was remanded to Dunedin, where the offence was committed. Larceny. —T. Norton Jowett was charged with stealing a cloak, value 15s, the property of Elizabeth Hall. The prosecutrix deposed she was a servant at Mr Clark’s, hairdresser, in Colombo street. On Thursday evening, she missed an ulster coat, which she had washed in the morning, and hung out to dry upon a line in the back yard. The coat produced in the Court was the same. Flora Reynolds, housemaid at the Golden Fleece Hotel, deposed that she could see into Mr Clark’s yard from the back window of the hotel. Last Thursday, _ she saw the prisoner take the prosecutrix's ukter off the line and go away with. By the time she got down stairs he had disappeared. John MoQuire, a farmer, living at Bingsland, deposed that on Thursday last he was in the Victoria Hotel. He saw the prisoner there, who asked him to bring a pair of sacks, and also a coat, for which he (witness) gave him 2s. He subsequently gave up the property to the police. Constable Noil proved arresting the prisoner yesterday at the Victoria Hotel. The accused, in his defence, said he had taken a through ticket by the Arawata, from ])unr din to Auckland, and had permission fr m the captain to come up to Christchurch <men he had got drinking, and must ha* o been hoenssed, as ho had no recollection 0* *nytiling which had taken place. Tl° witnesses Reynolds and MoQuire being raffed, stated to the best of their belief prisoner, although he might have been drinking, appeared sober enough to 00 accountable for his actions. The prisons' was lentenced to one month’s imprisonment with iard labor.
