WANGANUI RACES. [By Telegraph.] [prom ohe own correspondent.] First Day—Thursday, March 13. The weathei’ for the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Meeting was as fine as could be wished, the attendance on the course was very good, and the sport excellent. The results of the various events are given below : Hurdle Race, of 60 sovs; entrance fee, 1 guinea; weight for age. Distance, 24 miles, over eight jumps, 3ft. 9in. high. Victor 1 Grey Momus 2 Eangatira _ ... 3 Grey Momus was winning easily, but unfortunately fell at the last hurdle. Wanganui Derby, of 100 sovs; acceptances, 5 sovs ; H miles ; colts, Bst 101 b; fillies and geldings, Bst 51b, Forest Queen 1 Gladys 2 Plevna _ ... 3 Won by half-a-length. This event was a complete boil-over for the fraternity. Sapling Stakes, of 60 sovs, for two-year-olds ; entrance, 3 guineas. Distance, fmile. Derby weights. Slander Colt ... ... ... 1 Astronomer 2 Marie Stuart ... 3 Won easily. Time—lmin, 23sec. Wanganui Stakes of 100 sovs, entrance, 3 guineas ; distance, 2 miles ; weight for age. Pinfire 1 Resolution 2 Expectation 3 This was a capital race, and was only won by a neck. Time—3min. 53secs. Ladies’ Purse of 30 sovs, entrance 2 guineas ; distance U miles ; welter weights for'age ; non-professional riders allowed 71bs. Merlin 1 Grey Momus 2 Gladys 3 This also was a very close thing, Merlin winning by a head only. Flying Handicap of 50 sovs, nomination! sov, acceptance 2 sovs ; 1 mile Otawa, 7st 12lb 1 Peop-o’-Day, 6st 71b 2 Lady Ellen, 7st 51b 3 This event was only won by half a head. Time—lmin. 49secs. A protest was entered against <Mawa, on the ground of a cross, but was disallowed. Otawa and Resolution are favorites for the W J.C. Handicap to-morrow. OXFORD RACES.
