MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH Friday, March 1 4. Q [Before G. L. Leo, Esq., J.P-, and fch. J of Christchurch.] j DeUnS and Disorderly.— A first offem was fined ss, and Elizabeth Bennett was sen. to gaol for one month with hard labor. Indecent Assault. John Manners, charged with indecently assaulting a respect* able female, was, on the application of the police, remanded until the 12bh inst- _ Stealing Clothes. George Wilks was charged with stealing a quantity of Uuen clothing, the property of Mary Snoswell. Theclothing, which consisted of a bundle of wet linen, was identified by the prosecutrix, whohad left them in some tubs in the yard. Constable McDeritt proved the arrest of tho accused, whom he saw carrying a bundle, which lie threw away when he saw he was noticed. Ho subsequently picked up the bundle which tho prisoner threw away, and when tho latter was taken to the Police Depot his clothes were all wet. The Bench held that the offence had been clearly proved, and sentenced the prisoner to two months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Thomas Norton Jowett was charged with stealing a lady a overcoat, value 15s, the property of Elizabeth Hall, and remanded to the 15th inst. Wandering Horses and Cattle.—Job Oallimore, Wm. Stanton, and D. 0. Martin were each fined 10s and 2« costs for allowing their horses to wander at large. Harry Staoo was fined 10s for allowing three cows to treipass on a public road. Assault. —Robert Nelson was summoned for assaulting Mary Hannan, on tho Bth March. The prosecutrix stated the defendant came into her house and began disputing about some onions. She ordered him out, but instead of going ho knocked her violently down. The defendant said he merely pushed her away from him in self defence as sha threatened him with a broom-stick and “ suited the action to the word.” The defendant was fined 40s or one month’s imprisonment. Walter Hardie was summoned, for assaulting Henry Goodie on the 20th February. Tho assault, which consisted ot striking the complainant twice, rolling him on the ground, and tearing his clothes, was proved on the evidence of three witnesses, and the defendant made an incoherent defence, but was so obviously intoxicated that he was removed in the custody of the police, and ordered to bo detained until he was in a fit condition to be dealt with. Subsequently the defendant was brought into Court and fined 20s and costs. C. Dalwood was summoned by Edward George for assault. The defendant having apologised, the Bench allowed tho charge to be withdrawn.
