NEWS OF THE DAY.
Rev. J. Patbeson’s Lecture. Our readers are reminded that the Rev. James Paterson’s amusing and instructive lecture, “ Horae Life and Influence,” will bo delivered this evening in Old St. Paul’s Church, Lichfield street, at 7 30 p m. Resident Magisthate’s Court. This day William Mitchell was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor for stealing a watch from P. M. Thompson in the Park. John Duncan and J. Mcßride for a similar offence commilted in Cashel street were sentenced, the former to six months’ and the latter to three months’ imprisonment, both with hard labor. The case of GK Wilkes, charged with stealing clothing, was remanded for a week. A. Clephane was summoned, at the instance of the City Council, for placing a stone step in front of the Oddfellow’s Hall. The defendant said the matter rested with the trustees of the Hull. The case was adadjourned for a week. If the obstruction was removed, no further steps would be taken. Inteepbotincial Riper Match —This match will be fired at the meeting of the Rifle Association, which will probably be held on Monday and Tuesday next. The Otago men will compote in the matches of the Association, and also in the Interprovineial. Sunntside Asylum.— The pantomine of “ Little Red Riding Hood,” which was recently given at the Asylum so successfully, will be repeated to-morrow evening.
Inqubst.—An inquest was held yesterday at 3 p.m., at the Heathcote Valley Hotel, to inquire into the circumstances attending the death of the man Pearce, who met with a fatal accident on the previous day by a fall or clay. After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict of “ Accidental Death.
They also stated that no blame was attributable to anyone. Ashburton County Steeplechase. A meeting of the committee was held at the Somerset Hotel, Ashburton, Mr Crisp in the chair. The stewards and office bearers were appointed, and the committee adjourned till Monday, March 24th, The Road Roller. —The road roller, which has for some time been inactive, was yesterday at work iu Durham street south flattening down the roadway. As soon us this street is finished the roller will bo employed in other parts of the city. Tinwald. —The new church in this township has just been completed, and will be opened by the Bishop of Christchurch on Monday, Maroh 17bh. The ceremony will be succeeded by a tea and entertainment in the evening. •
Drivers’ Licenses. —Most of the annual applications for the renewal of drivers’ licenses at the City Council on Monday night were granted, but, in consequence of certain police information, several wore refused. The consideration of others was postponed, and before being granted the holders will be cautioned. Those granted will bo ready for issue to-day. _ • Assessment Court, Ashburton. —This Court was held before A. Le Q-rand Campbell, Esq,, Judge, on Tuesday, March 11th. Mr Christie appeared to object to the valuation of section 32,595, situated on the Hinds, the property of Mr A. Moore, of Christchurch. Evidence being taken, the valuation was reduced from £6 to £5 per acre. The section contained 307 acres. There wore no other objections, but the valuator was granted leave to make sundry clerical alterations. Kaitanoata Reliee Fund. A large meeting of the general committee connected with this fund was held last night in the City Council Chambers, when a number of subcommittees were appointed to carry out the various arrangements in connection with the forthcoming fete, to take place on Monday next. Judging from what has been done hitherto, and the general interest taken in the matter, the fete will be a great success. A report of what was done last evening appears elsewhere.
Standard Time. The various public clocks in Christchurch are sadly in want of regulation. The clocks at the College, the Government Buildings, and the West Christchurch school, arc several minutes out ; that at the railway station is different again, while the clock at the Lyttelton post office, opposite the station, which is usually supposed to be a guide for travellers, is exactly five minutes out as compared with the Christchurch railway clock. It is to be hoped that as soon as the new Government Buildings in Christchurch are fitted with a clock, some better standard of time will be kept. Charitable Aid Board.— A meeting of the Hospital and ( haritable Aid Beard will be held to-morrow, 13th March, 1879 at 4 p.m. at the Hospital. Promenade Concert. —A full rehearsal of the ladies and gentlemeu who are to take part in this concert wi»l take place at Coombs’s leather warehouse, Lichfield street, at 8 o’clock this evening. Diocesan Sunday School Association. —The members of this Association will meet at St. Miahael’s Schoolroom, at 8 o’clock to-morrow evening, when a model lesson will be given. Eyrkton Eoad District. —A meeting of ratepayers is announced to be held at Ohoka this evening to consider the question of the removal of the Eoad Board office to a central portion of the district.
New Zealand Tonic Sol-Fa Association. —Intending members of this assoc alien are requested to meet at the Temperance Hah, Gloucester street, at half-past seven o’clock this evening. Canterbury A. and P. Association. — The annual meeting of this association will take place at half-past two o’clock to-morrow afternoon.
Lecture. —The first of a series of lectures in connection with the Sabbath-school Teachers’ Association of St. Paul’s Church will be de'ivered this evening’ in the old Church, Lichfield street, by the Kov. Mr Paterson, of Wellington. The subject chosen is “ Homo Life and Influences.”
