SOUTH CANTERBURY RICES. [By Tblegeajh.] [from oue special eepobtee.] First Day.— Tuesday, Maech 11. Timaeu, March 11. The stewards of the South Canterbury Jockey Club were favored with beautiful weather and a large attendance to-day. The new stand, which is a very convenient one and a great improvement on the old, was well filled, and among its occupants were a large number of ladies. The arrangements were good and the starting punctual. The sport was not of the first order, but I fancy tomorrow will show a great improvement in this respect. Business commenced with the Maiden Plate, for which eight accompanied Mr Stansell to the post. Undine and Milo were almost the only ones enquired for, while Maori, who was supposed to be the best of the local animals, had a few supporters. Jack made most of the running in the early part of the race, but Milo and Undine took charge half a mile from home. The two favorites made a good race of it close to the rails, when the marc, who was well ridden by Clifford, came away and won easily. Sapphira, who seemed quite out of it at first, finished third. Templeton and Mata being scratched, only four saddled up for the S.C.J.C. Handicap, and when the horses went out of the saddling paddock 2 to 1 was laid on Camballo. In this instance, backers were correct in their judgment, for Titaniawas out of it after about three-quarters of a mile, and Chancellor shortly following suit, the issue was left to the favorite and Laertes. The latter ran a better horse than in Dunedin, but he could never ask Camballo to gallop, the Yaldhurst representative running as he pleased. The Publicans’ Handicap proved a virtual walk over for Ray, as only Templeton and Titania went to the post. Their owner declared to win with the mare, who cantered round a few lengths off the old horse. A field of live weighed out for the Flying Handicap, which again went to the Yaldhurst confederacy with the aid of Camballo, Laertes was again his nearest attendant at the finish, with old Templeton third. York and Ratcatcher were never in the hunt after the first half mile. A Selling Hack race followed. After a slight delay at the post the lot got well away together, Jack making piny in front of Milo and Maori, the rest all together except Sapphira, who was tying a length behind the ruck. In this order they passed the stand. At the turn Milo and Maori were leading, with Jack close up, and Undine coming up. Pauline and Mistletoe were already outpaced, and here Sapphira went up to f ourth place. Coming into the straight Jack fell, and Sapphira got on terms with the leaders. A good race ensued to the rails, when Undine came away and won cleverly by a short halflength from Milo, who beat Sapphira by a length and a half for second place. Time — 2min. 54sec.

With the other two about a couple of lengths behind they ran to the stand, where Laertes took up the running, and Titania fell back to the rear. A little past the next turn Chancellor was disposed of, and the favorite getting on terms with Laertes at the back of the course cut him down in the next halfmile, and from the straight the race was never in doubt, the favorite winning easily by four lengths from Laertes, Chancellor, who was not persevered with, an indifferent third.
