"Tasman,"in the "Hobart Town Mercury " of the 23rd ult. says : —There came to a clerical friend of his, a few weeks ago, a young gentleman, newly arrived iu the colony, an undergraduate of the University of Cambridge. Presenting a letter of introduction from a college chum of the reverend's, the new arrival sought advice as to his future movements. " What are your views?" enquired the cleric? "Oh!" replied his visitor, " that's just the point, I am told that I can get into the church on the one hand, and I have an offer from a music hall proprietor, of a six months' engagement as leading comic man, and book-keeper, at £4 10s a week, on the other hand. Both are in my line, as these testimonials will prove. Give me your advice." The young fellow aicepted the serio-comic business. A Boston paper gives the following as a specimen of the dramatic criticism of the near future. It is an amusing satire on the too prevailing custom of over-dressing upon the stage : -" The part of Cordelia, perhaps the most affecting of all the mighty master's creations, was sustained by a princess robe of white poult de soie, trimmed with large bunches ecru, turned up, and cut bias ; diamond ornaments. The unyielding, neverwavering purpose of the liendish Goneril found an able exponent in a heavy robe of black organdie with fan tail, knife plaiting, and pompadour corsage, and the other parts were excellently rendered by the respective costumes sustaining them, a more detailed description of which is, owing to the crowded state of our columns, deferred to a more fitting opportunity."
