MEETING OF TEACHERS.
An adjourned meeting of the North Canterbury teachers was held in the Wesleyan schoolroom on Saturday, the Rev. J. Cumming in the chair. The Chairman stated that the principal business was to receive the report of the committee which had been appointed to draw up resolutions re new classification and syllabus of work. The following resolutions wore carried: — (I.) That inasmuch as a graduate's possession of a diploma from a recognised University was sufficient guarantee of his scholarly^attainments, this meeting is of opinion that divisions A and B of the new classification are superfluous. (2.) That the pupil teachers' course of instruction be such as would enable them to enter for the matriculation examination at the end of the fourth year. (3.) That the Minister of Education be requested to take inta consideration the advisability of adopting a uniform system of standard examination, and that a set of type questions be issued to serve as a practical interpretation of the work required. (4.) That as far as possible the science prescribed by the syllabus be taught as a knowledge of common things in the form of object lessons during two years of the science course, and that during the third year the more systematic study of some one science be taken up, provided snifcable apparatus be supplied. It was deoided to forward a copy of the resolutions passed to the Minister of Education, through the North Canterbury Board. The formation of an educational institute with branch associations, was taken into consideration, but after considerable discussion was indefinitely postponed.
