[Press Special Wire.] Auckland, March 3, A northern settler has sent to Auckland seven loads of grapes grown on one rood of ground. He thinks 2£d a pound will pay. Mr Justice Richmond held a sitting in Bankruptcy this morning, when James Teesd le, who « as apprehended on warrant from Christchurch, w*a examined by Mr Bell on behalf of th* trustee of the estate of Pallant, a bootmaker, recently bankrupt. Pallant, shortly before his bankruptcy, made over a great portion of his stock to Teesdale, but the sale was annulled by the Court. Teesdale refused to appear as a witness, and made his escape to i hristchnroh. This morning he admitted having received stock to the value of .£SOO, besides plant from Pallant. He did not remain in business two months, and in the meantime he decla r ed he sold very little, yet when the trustee seized the goods they only only realised £2OO, and were on 13’ worth .£290 at the price ti ey were invoiced to him. He admitted sales to the extent of £BB, but professed his utter inability to account for the balance. He declared that he had p..id away in wages aH he bad x-eceived with the exception of £l9, with which ho went to Christchurch. As nothing more satisfactory than this could be got out of the witness, the examination was adjourned until to-morrow. His Honor discharged the man from custody, the trustee consenting, but warned him that he was again liable to arrest if he attempted to abscond. An order for the costs of the proceedings was made against him. Another attempt is being made to arouse an agitation respecting the action of the City Council in regard to the drainage of the city. A movement is on foot here to form a naval brigade. A canvass has been held for members, and already one hundred gentlemen have signified their willingness to join if their services are acc< pted by the Government. Dr. Skao publishes a letter defending the m magement of the Lunatic Asylum against certain charges made against it by Mr Hutcheson, late Mayor, and says that several of the letterswhich reflected upon the management were tmfair and ungenerous, and one in particular ha says was dictated by per-oial vindictiveness. Mr John Hislop, Under Secretary for Education, is expected to visit Dunedin next week.
