CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, Makch 4. [Before Q-. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.j Dhunk and Dxsoedeely, William Wright, charged with being drunk and assaulting Constable William Lawler in the execution of his duty, was fined 5s for the first offence, and 40s for the second. John Scott Ridley was fined 10s for being drunk. Prank Mclntyre was charged with being drunk and disorderly, creating a disturbance in the Perthshire Arms, Lincoln, and assaulting the landlord, Joseph Sluis. Joseph Sluis stated the facts of the case, and said the prisoner’s behavior had been so violent that he was compelled to call in the assistance of the police and give him in custody. George Baker, a laborer, corroborated the landlord’s evidence. Constable Weatherly proved the arrest of the prisoner. The Bench dismissed the charges of drunkenness and assault, and inflicted a fine of 10s for creating a disturbance with (Is 4d costs of one witness. Lahceny. —Edward Fitzgerald was charged with the larcency of £l2 from the person of Edward Terry. Mr Joyce appeared on behalf of the accused, who was remanded until the 6th inst. Stealing Bkbe,—James, Alexander, and Andrew Jack, three little boys, were charged with stealing beer from the house of Mr Thomas Dunn, Wilson’s Bridge. The prosecutor said that since he had laid the information he had ascertained that his own son had asked the children in to his father’s house, and invited them to take some beer. He asked permission to withdraw the charge, which the Bench permitted. Embezzlement. Joseph Cullimore, on remand from Wellington, was charged with embezzling £2 3s 6d, the property of his master, Edward Smith, a bootmaker, in Colombo street. The prisoner, who said he was going on for sixteen years of age, pleaded “ Guilty.” He was sentenced to receive two dozen lashes with a cat-o’-nine-tails, and twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. LYTTELTON. Tuesday, Mahcii 4, [Before Dr. Donald, J.P] Deunk.—Joseph Allan and H. Arundel were presented on this charge, and were respectively fined 10 s. Bad Language,— R. Owens was fined 10s, or forty-eight hours with hard labor, for using profane language, Stbiking a Policeman. — T. Lockhardt was fined 20s for this offence. Vagkancy.— A Chinaman was presented for boirg found asleep in a truck at the railway yard. Sentenced to forty eight hours. Remanded —H. Bell, a seaman on board the barque Elizabeth, was charged with refusing his lawful commands on board that vessel. There being but one J.P. on the Bench, and a search for another having failed, prisoner was remanded until Thursday next.
