[PEB PEES 3 AGENCY.] Blenheim, February 28. There was a fearful lire at three this morning. It broke out in the back rooms of Mr Jensons fancy goods depot, and spread on the southern side to Griffith's, agent; Many’s, photographer; Collier’s, fancy goods; Scott s, confectioned; O’Sullivan’s, agent ; McNab s, solicitor. And at the same time extended on tha north aide to Horne and Cleghorne’s, surgeons and druggists; Presswood’s, watchmaker; Pritchard’s, seedsman ; Healey and Son s, shoemakers ; Dodson's, bookseller; Jellyman s, butcher. The fire was stopped by pulling down the buildings of Mr Quinn, watchmaker. There was not a breath of wind. The Fire Brigade worked well. Messrs Penny, Falconer and Robinson Brothers’ premises were scorched, and the breakage at the latter establishment was considerable. The insurance on the block is inconsiderable. Some offices would not renew some of them, which only lapsed week. Healey’s stock was insured in the Norwich for .£6OO, half of which was re-insured in the in the Standard and Colonial for £250, and in the New Zealand for .£350; Scott’s building was insured £2io in the Colonial ; Jensen’s stock, in the Genial, for £350, in the Union for .£2OO ; Presswood’s stock, in the Northern, for .£200; Pritchard’s, Macey’s, Collier’s, an 1 Penny’s, no insurance. Most of the goods were saved. Griffiths’ building was insured for .£4OO in the Union ; Dobson’s stock for .£4OO in the Now Zealand ; much W'as saved here ; Horne and Cleghorn, no insurance; nothing saved but books; Robinson Bros., stock damaged by removal ; insured in Victoria for .£750, and in Liverpool and London for .£SOO ; Jellyman’s building in National for £100; O’Sullivan and McNab, buildings in the Victoria for .£l5O : Wall, on buildings in the Norwich for £2OO. The “ Gazette” notifies that the administrator for the Government has appointed Mi' W< H. Floyd to bo superintendent of railway telegraphs.
[PEOM OUB OWN OOBBESPONDENT.] Invebcabgill, February 28. The Rev. Mr Varley opened here last night. There was a tea meeting to welcome him after the meeting, at which 500 were present. There was a special trip by the contractors yesterday over the new Riverton _ and Invercargill hno, when the last pair of rails were laid. It will be over a month before the line is opened.
