This was the first match for the challenge cup this season, and South Melbourne are therefore the holders until beaten. Carlton commenced their match against Melbourne, but although they had the assistance of Blackham, who made 49, they only put together 124—a total easily passed by Melbourne with the loss of only four wickets. Robinson made 61 in his usual finished style, and Percy McDonnell made 42, for the Metropolitan Club. The Victorians have defeated Lord Harris’ Eleven by two wickets. Monte also came in at the end with a useful 17, and what at *ne time looked like an easy defeat by an innings was changed into a fair prospect of a good match, ,the total being 261, or 64 behind. Alexander made Gl, Baker 31, Horan 26, Major 24, besides the scores mentioned above. In the second innings the Englishmen only made 171.
