Arrived—February 24. Isabella, brigantiue, 82 tons, Creagh, from "Waitapu. Master, agent. Arrived—February 24. Mauri Grnharu, schooner, 80 tons, Jortrenson, from Kaipara. The schooner Maud Graham, from Knipara, arrived last night. The vessels in port had their bunting flying this morning, in honor of the marriage at Lyttelton of Miss Rouse to Mr Neville, draughtsman to the Harbor Board. The Union Steamship Company's Hnwea is due to-morrow morning from Auckland and East Coast ports. She will proceed hence to Port Chalmers. The steamer Oreti sailed for the Mannknn. via "Wellington and other ports, at six o'clock last The brig Fawn was berthed at the Breastwork yesterday; the Canny Scot, towed into the stream, was succeeded at No. 3 by the Letterfourie; the barque Chile was berthed at the Gladstone Pier.lß Mr A. Joyce, the time-ball keeper, sends the following :—ln consequence of the astronomical clock at. the time ball being cleaned the ball will not be dropped for a few days. The German Government has under consideration a proposal for the adoption of an international code of regulations for the use of ships at sea, with a view to preventing collisions. One of the re :ulations suggested is that in the Channel, from the Isle of Wight to the Goodwin Sands, vessels shall, under all circumstances, sail at slow speed. The number of wrecks reported to December 14th, 1878. amounted to 1501. On December 12th a full-rigged ship, the Loch Long, Captain Boldchild, from Calcutta, which arrived in London Docks on the Bth December, with a general cargo, was discharging at the east quay when, without any previous warning, she canted over outwards, carrying away the rings on the quay to which she was fastened. The whole of the crew excepting the captain were on board. Fortunately her keel caught the foundation of the quay, which prevented her from entirely col sizing:. In addition to her crew there were two females and several merchants on board. One of the men, J. Campbell, who waa see King employment as an engineer, in trying to escape fell head first down the side, and in this perilous position was jammed between the ship and the stone wall of the jetty, sustaining injuries of the head. She brings Sydney dates o Febrnary 18th. "The New Zealand Shipping Co.'s ship Maravel is ready to sail for Lyttelton, where she loads wheat for London. Her departure has been delayed owing to the difficulty experienced in getting a crew. A large number of the men are on shore, but the captain refuses to give more than £4 10d, and they are holding out for «-S 10s. Port Chalmers, February 2t. Sailed—Anazi, barque, for London. Tattranoa, February 24 The chances of getting the Taupo oil' are hopeful. By the Hawea, which arrived yesterday, centrifugal pumps and three Californian pumps, to be used in the attempt to pump the water out of the Taupo, were received. Of the former, one has a six-horse power boiler, and will raise 20,000 gallons of water per minute. The other has a three-horse power boiler, and raises about half that quantity. The Californian pumps workin sluices, something in the same manner as those used by gold diggers, and should the combined action of the pumps have the effect of raising the hall at all, it is intended to pass a sail under her bottom and then pump her dry and tow her to Auckland. Should this not be practicable she will be beached. Ihe chief officer, with the entire crew, are working nnder the directions of Captain Worsp, the inspector appointed by the insurance companies, and have alroady completed arrangements for receiving the boiler on board The main yard has been rnn out and properly rigged up, and the topmast yard converted into a derrick. Bluff, February 24. The Tararua left Melbourne on the 18th at 2.30 p.m., arrived it Hobart Town at 3 p m. on the 20th, left at 11 p.m., passed the S danders at 10 30 a.m. on the 24th, and arrived at the Bluff at 5.30 p.m.; she sails at 2 p.m. to-morrow. She brings 44 saloon and 26 steenge passengers for all ports. Saloon—Mrs Parsons, Messrs Lee, Parsons, Dowling, and Searle, Misses Lee, Parsons,and Jameson; six in steerage. Wellington, February 24. Arrived, ot 5 p.m.—Eaaby, from Sydney. P' ssengers for Lyttuitun—Mrs J. C. Pope, Mrs McK ,y and three children, Mr J. C. Pope, and thirteen steerage.
