Mblbottenb, February 24, The English, in their second innings, made 171. [Via Auckland.] Sydney, February 18. Ned Kelly left a written statement at Jerilderie, which is full of intimidations against the police. Kelly says that at foui teen years of age he received a sentence of three months for using a neighbor 's horse without his consent. After this he says the police “ became a nuisance to his family.” He then became a wandering gamester. He says he had stolen two hundred horses when “ the fray took place with Conatable Fitzpatrick.” The constable came to arrest his innocent brother Dan, and his mother said, “If Ned were here he would kick you out of the house.” Ned Kelly then came up, a struggle ensued, and Fitzpatrick was shot. This statement of Felly is said to completely exonerate the police from the charge of taking improper liberties with his sister, which is now said to be a mere attempt to excite sympathy. The want, of money is being severely felt m Victoria. A man named Kendall was found shot in the Domainal; Sydney. [Via Bluff ] Melbourne, February 19. Another vacancy has arisen by the death of W. L. King, member for Footscray, where a Ministerial candidate is certain to be returned. The period of intense heat which has lately prevailed has passed away. The weather has been cool and pleasant. A ver» large number of deaths have b. en reported in the last month or six weeks. Selectors have suffered very severely in nearly all the districts from bush fires, rust in the wheat crop, and general stagnation. The proceedings of the Kelly gang at .Terilderie were even more audacious and extra-ordinary than at Enroa. They were actually in possession of the township for forty-eight hours from midnight on Saturday to seveu on Monday evening. They decoyed the police out of their beds under pretence that a disturbance bad taken place. They then made them prisoners, and having put on the police uniforms, masqueraded about the township. The police on both sides of the Murray have been completely baffled, as no traces of the outlaws have been discovered. The Government of this colony has increased the amount of reward for their capture. A splendid wool show is being held at Hastings, Cunningham and Co.’s. There were sev.uty-one exhibits of very superior quality, and tho competition was very close for the five gold cups. W Gibson and Sons, of Tasmania, took tf e three first. The bn Idiug for the International Exhibition has been commenced, and wid bo very handsome and extensive when completed Lord Harry won two cups and the Handicap at Hobart Town pretty easily. His owner netted nearly five thousand by winning the double nt the Geelong meeting. Another embracery case is likely soon to oome before the Court, very similar to the last The secretary of an Oddfellows’ Grand Lodge is reported missing, and it is said his account! are not altogether correct.
