MARLBOROUGH RACES.
[By Telegraph.] First Day, Wednesday, February 19th, The Marlborough races commenced to-day. There was a good attendance, but not so large as on previous occasions. There were a number of visitors from Wellington. Hurdle Race of 30 sovs Entrance, 2 sovs. Weights: 3 yrs, 9st; 4 yra, lOst.Slbs; 5 yrs, lOst 91bs ;fi yrs, list 31bs. Distance, twice round and a distance. Mr Mclvor’s Loch Lomond (Owner) 1 Mr Cochrane's Blue 8e11... (Owner) 2 Mr Defere’a Kikike ... ... ... 3 Mr Dillon’s Kiwi also ran. Grey Momus was scratched. Blue Bell led at the stai t, closely followed by Kikike, who took second place. Blue Bell kept ahead until the eighth fence. Loch Lomond Jthen drew up and passed her, and kept the lead all the way. Kiwi stumbled at the first fence, refused at the second, and was afterwards out of the race. There was a capital race between the rest, who took all the fences in good style. Time —14min. 17secs. There was little or eo betting. Shkaebrs’ Purse, a handicap of 15 sovs. Entrance, 1 sov; for all horses not entered for any other race of this meeting and htat have never won a stake of more than 15 sovs. Once round; heats. Clarence 1 Hero _ 2 Marlborough Cur, a handicap of 100 sovs. Nomination 1 sov. Acceptance 5 sovs. Rata, Bst (Redwood) 1 Grey Momus, 7st 131bs ... (Clifford) 2 'J reason, 7st 131b5... ... (Freeth) 3 For this race five came to the post. Betting—Even on Grey MomuSj 3 to 1 agst the others. Rata jumped off with a slight lead, Grey Momus and Treason close after. They ran in this order for the first mile and a-half, when Treason fell away. The two then raced neck and neck round the lower turn, when Rata drew ahead by a length, which Grey Momus was not able to lessen, Rata winning by half a length. Time, 3min, 52secs. Sapling Stakes of 30 sovs. _ Entrance 3 sovs, for two-year-olds. Weights; colts, Bst lOibs ; fillies, Bst 51bs. Distance, three quarters of a mile. Introduction (A. Redwood) 1 Magnolia ...
