The German papers quote some statistics comparing the proportion of married persons in the populations of the different countries of Europe. Germany ranks only seventh in the list. To 10,000 souls in each country there are in Hungary, 6475 ; in Franco, £566; in England and Wales, 5398; in Austria, 5211 ; in Italy, 5270; in Denmark, filOi ; in G-ermany, 5107 ; in Norway, 5065 ; in Sweden, 4052 ; in the Netherlands, 4948 ; in Scotland, 4678; in Belgium, 4634; in Switzerland, 4582 ; and in Ireland, 4313. Mr Patey, assistant-secretary to the English Post Office, is negotiating with the German telegraph authorities for a reduction in the telegraph tariff between England and Germany, concurrently with the introduction of the word-rate system. Sir Joseph Bazalgette has presented a scheme for diverting the sewage of Cambridge from the Eiver Cam. The estimated cost for sewers, pumping machinery, and proparing the land is put at about £40,000.
