SOUTH TOWN BELT.

To the Editor of the Globe. g IRj At the beginning of last week I saw some men cleaning the South belt side channel. They did a little to it at certain places, and after about Wednesday I saw them no more. For a day or two I thought that perhaps their unpleasant work had made them ill, or that they had gone on a picnic; but, while reading your paper on Saturday evening, I found that the Inspector of Nuisances, in his report to the Board of Health, stated that tho work was done. I could, however, point out a place in the said channel where the water now stands five or six inches higher than it would do if the weeds and filth were cleaned out, and two culverts that drain two houses now stand half full of water, a state they have not been in at least for four years. When the wet weather sets in, I suppose the state of affairs will be better still. If, Sir, you think I have exaggerated, I can but refer you to that portion of the belt between Selwyn street and the Lincoln road. If I had a ditch in my garden half as dirty as the one in the front of it, I believe I should be compelled (and very justly so) to clean it out. But perhaps a nuisance owned by a public body is less likely to breed fevers and so on than one owned by a private man. I hope you will find room for these few lines in your paper, and I may also add that I would not have troubled you if I knew to which of our Boards or which of our Councils to write to, for I am living on what appears to be no man’s land - unless indeed it belongs to the rate collector. Yours, &c., A. B. South Town belt, Feb. 17th,
