NEWS OF THE DAY.

Boabd of Health. —At the ordinary meeting of the Board this morning, there were present—Messrs Harman (chairman), R-.:ss, J. E. Brown, H. J. Tancred, ami Hull. The Inspector’s report was read and adopted. A letter was read from the Government, stating that for the future the medical officer of Christchurch would be supplied with “ Gazettes.” Also, a letter stating that the Inspector of Nuisances had received instructions to carry out the pan system, and to prosecute in all cases where the system was not being carried out. After some more business the meeting dispersed, Deainagb Eoaed. —An ordinary meeting of this Board was held this morning. Present,: the Chairman, and Messrs J. E, Brown, Hall, Duncan, Blakiston, Ross, and Hobbs. A full report appears elsewhere. Muff Cbicket Match. —A muff cricket match was commenced this morning, between twenty-two of Lyttelton and twenty-two of Christchurch. The former were captained by Mr H. Hawkins, the latter by Mr F. Pavitt. Lyttelton won the toss, and elected to handle the willow, and were finally disposed of for 42 runs. The Christchurch muffs were in when our reporter left. Extension of the Telegbaph, The posts for carrying the wire connecting the IFire Brigade Stations and Mr Superintendent Harris’ house are in course of erection in Gloucester street east.

Cube Boating Club. The monthly meeting of members of this club was not held on Wednesday evening, as appointed. It is now proposed to wind up the affairs of the club by selling its boats. Thkates Royal. —There was a good house last night at the theatre, a number of visitors from Lyttelton taking advantage of the late train to be present at the performance of “ Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”

Mb Conyers. —This gentleman is so far recovered from his late severe accident that he leaves Gore on his return to Christchurch to-day, and is expected to arrive by the express to morrow evening. It will probably bo some weeks before he is enabled to resume his duties as Commissioner of Railways. The Ministry. —Messrs Stout and Ballance, who have been for the past fortnight in the South, are expected to return to Wellington next week, and on their way up they will probably remain for a day or two in Christchurch. Advantage will be taken of the presence of the Colonial Treasurer, to interview him on the subject of’the land fund due to the local bodies. The Fire in Lichfield Street. —Mr Superintendent Harris desires to acknowledge, on behalf of the Christchurch Volunteer Fire Brigade, the receipt of a cheque for £2O from Messrs Saunders Bros, in recognition of the valuable services rendered by the brigade at the recent fire in Lichfield street.

Provincial Council Chamber. - Since the Provincial Council Chamber, which was once regarded as one of the ornaments of Christchurch, has been handed over to the Harbor Board, Selwyn County Council, District Court litigants, Harmonic Society, and other bodies, it appears to be nobody’s business to keep it decently clean. On the occasion of the Governor’s levee the strangers’ and reporters’ galleries were each in a filthy state of dirt, the seats being an inch thick in dust.

Templaey.— The lodge Star of Freedom, Sydenham, held its usual weekly meeting on Tuesday last. Two new members were initial ei, after which the officers were installed bj the Lodge Deputy for the ensuing quarter : —W.O.T., Bro. Williamson; W.V.T., Bro. Clegg; W.S., Bro. Meikleham ; W.F.S., Bro. Shierlaw ; W.T., Bro, Jacques ; W.C., Sis. Fox ; W.M., Bro. Palmer; W.l G., Bro. Main : W.0.G., Bro. Calder ; W.R H. 8., Sis. Calchr ; W.L.H.S., Sis, Merriman ; A. 9., Bro, Snell; D.M., Sis. Fox; P.W.C.T., Bro. Palmer. This is the only lodge in Sydenham connected with the Right Worthy Grand Lodge of the World. Rev. Me Inolis at Kaiapol — This talented lecturer on “ Scottish Song” met with a very good reception at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Kaiapoi, on Wednesday evening, when there was a large attendance and an appreciative audience to enjoy the masterly manner in which he delivers his lecture. His illustrations of the fine traits in the character of Scotia’s sons were very happy, and frequently occasioned outbursts of hearty and enthusiastic applause. At the conclusion of the lecture the rev. lecturer stated that if possible he would comply with the request made by the Rev. Mr McGregor to preach in the Presbyterian Church on his return from the North Island. The Lunatic Asylum. —ln addition to the various deputations already mentioned as having interviewed the Minister of Works on Wednesday, he was waited upon by another in reference to the proposed additions to the Lunatic Asylum. It may be remembered that tenders wore called for those additions—a full description of which was published some time ago —and that the lowest tender was very much in excess of the sum set apart for the work. Indeed, to carry out the improvements in accordance with the plans will take some £35,000 or £40,000. The Hon. E. Richardson, M.H.R, pointed this out, and pressed upon Mr Macandrew the nccaisity of the work being carried out without delay. The Minister of Public Works suggested that the additions should be gone on with to the extent of the vote, but promised to give the mutter fuller inquiry on arrival in Wellington, and to communicate the decision of tbo Government on the matter.

Ms Justice Johnston. —His Honor Mr Justice Johnston was yesterday a passenger by the E-ingarooma tor Wellington.

Flaxi'on. —lt is intended to erect a parsonage for the curate of this parsh, and at a meeting of church members held on Monday last, Messrs Mulcock, May, and (loodeve were elected to decide upon the best site tor the same, and take steps towards obtaining the necessary funds.

Mu A. Dandebgan. —A rumour was r< - ferrcd to in these columns some two months ago that there was a prospoet of Mr A. Lundergan’s return to Chriatchu ch. He has now hem appointed organist of St. John’s Church, Latimer square —a position which ho filled some years back —and he has written to accept the appointment, and to state that ho hopes to ho in Christchurch at an early date to enter upon the duties of hia office. EdugA’t ional. —Tho teachers of North Canterbury will told a meeting in the Wesleyan schoolroom, Durham street, on Saturday, at 1 p m. Drainage Board. —The usual fortnightly meeting of tho Drainage Board and Board of Health Avill take place at half-past ten o’clock this morning. Cricket Fixtures. The Sydenham Youths are requested to be at the station at 7.15 a.m. sharp A match between twenty-two Lyttelton muffs and an equal number from Christchurch will take place on the U C.O. ground this morning. Wickets will he pitched at eleven o’clock. Luncheon, which is the great event on these occasions, will be provided in the large marquee used on the occasion of tho interprovincial match.
