Ga.no PtOtroiT. — V very successful (rial of a now implement, called the Carr and Hobson Gang Plough, took place yestesday on the farm of Mr Overton, near Templeton. Public Meeting at Kazakh. — A requisition to the Mayor has been put into circulation, asking him to convene a meeting to discuss tho question of mixing the boys and girls in tho classes at the borough school. Till! WRECK OF TIT!! SOUTHMIVSTER. — The master of the schooner Onward, which arrived yesterday from Piet on, observed, when passing this ill-fated slop lust Sunday morning, that tho wreck had parted amidships. The mainmast was standing, and some of the poop deck and the frame of the forepart of the vessel were visible above the vrat er. Deputations. —Tho Hon. tho Minister for Public Works yesterday had quite a field day in receiving deputations, no less than five having waited upon him in reference to the following matters : —Tho West Coast Railway, the Oxford and Malvern and Temuka R itlway, the Rakaia and Ashburton Porks Railway, the Canterbury Land Fund, and the Lyttelton Harbor Board. A report of the proceedings appears elsewhere. Theatre Royal. —This place of amusement was again well attended last night, and “Uncle Tom’s Cabin ” is increasing in popularity every evening. To-morrow evening arrangements will bo made by compression of the piece to have the performance over in time for visitors from Lyttelton to return by the late train, and on Saturday afternoon the first matinee will be given for the benefit of children and those who object to evening performances.

Oxfoed-Temuka Railway. —At a public meeting li»*ld at Termika on February 11th, the following resolutions were carried: — “ That this meeting is of opinion that the Minister of Public Works bo respectfully requested to take the necessary steps to at once proceed with the construction of that portion of the Oxford and Tomuka railway, commencing at its southern end, this meeting believing that this would be a great means for advancing the progress of the district.” “That a petition bo prepared and circulated for signature, to bo forwarded to the Minister of Public Works, praying that the survey of the Oxford and Temnka railway from Temuka to the north side of the Rangitata bridge may be proceeded with at once.”

The Noetii Road. —Steps are being taken by the surveyor of the Eyreton Eoad Board to protect the south bank of the Waimakariri with blocks of stone, near Mr Pashby’s farm, Kaiapoi. At the point at which operations have been commenced the river has made a formidable scour towards the road. A fence has been placed to prevent unwary passengers coming to grief, and over the bank the blocks of stone brought from Lyttelton are being deposited so as to form a groin. Already the effect has been found advantageous in shunting the current, and when the full quantity of one hundred tons of rock is in position, it is expected the experiment will be complete. Mr Wright purposes to add a smaller groin lower down stream, as a further aid in directing the course of the river over its former course, and thereby obviate the necessity of making the purchase of a new lino of road. The New Haeboe Boabd. —The elections for the new Lyttelton Harbor Board, the members of which will hold office for three years, are now complete. The following are the elected members of the Board ;—For the city of Christchurch, Messrs R. Allan and H. Sawtell ; for the Chamber of Commerce, Messrs D. Craig and C. W. Turner ; for the Selvvyn County Council, Mr R. J. S. Harman and the Hon. John Hull; for Lyttelton, Mr H. P. Murray-Aynsley. The Mayor of Lyttelton, cx officio, also represents that borough at the Board. The G-overnment, under the Act, have to nominate two members, and it is probable that they will be the Hon. E. Richardson and Mr P. Cunningham. The composition of the Board is, therefore, similar to the last one, except that Mr E. GK Weight retires, and his place is filled by Mr R. Allan.

Theatrical. Mddle. Charbonnet has made arrangements to accompany Miss Florence Colville and Mr Hoskins on a tour down South, for the purpose of giving a series of performances, embracing pianoforte recitals and the drawing room specialities in which Mr Hoskins and Miss Colville are now so popular. This tour will be the last of the celebrated comedian’s appearances in New Zealand before he makes the round of all the principal cities and towns in the Australian colonies, under the auspices of Messrs Hayman and Hiscocks. to whom he is under engagement for the ensuing twelve months. There is no doubt that the remarkable musical ability of Mdlle. Charbonnet, combined with the talent of Mr and Mrs Hoskins, will render the New Zealand tour highly successful. They perform in Timaru, Ashburton, and Oamaru, on their way to [Dunedin, and subsequently in the principal towns in Otngo, finishing in Invercargill, where they will probably appear in the newly built theatre. Plasterers’ Picnic. —A meeting of plasterers was held last night at the Market Hotel to consider the advisability of holding a picnic this summer, Mr Foley presided. The meeting was numerously attended, and it was unanimously resolved that the picnic should be held on Saturday week, February 22nd, at Sumner. A committee was appointed to arrange details, and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
